Past-Perfect
1. Fred remembered the day he and George got their Hogwarts letters. Errol had flown into Percy's plate with them tied around his foot, and in their rush to open the letters, Fred had broken Percy's nose with a rogue elbow thrust. The older boy had been raving mad, eyes streaming as profusely as his bleeding nose, as he shrieked about not being able to go on his date with Penelope. Fred had felt ashamed for a moment, before George had gripped his hand and swung his own fist at Percy to shut him up, adding a split lip to his already marred face.
2. The boys had missed supper that night, but it hardly mattered.
3. He remembered how he and George had sent Ginny a Hogwarts Toilet seat, and how angry they had been when the gnomes got to it before Ginny could see it.
4. He remembered the first bit of magic he had done, when he'd turned Ron's teddy bear into a spider as the boy slept on, undaunted.
5. He remembered feeling incredibly guilty when George tried to do magic that very day, and failed.
6. He remembered his first DADA class about Boggarts, and how his boggart had taken shape of himself standing alone. Lee Jordan had sniggered, "Now I know why you hate sleeping without your stuffed toy," but Fred knew that his only fear was not having George beside him.
7. He remembered his mother's horrified expression when she had walked in on the twins folding the laundry. She had been too anxious to discover what pranks they'd played to remember that it was mother's day.
8. He recalled the warmth his mother's adoring tears had brought him when the twins bought her a de-gnomer with their first income.
9. He remembered the sense of accomplishment he'd felt when he kicked Mrs. Norris while "borrowing" Harry's Invisibility Cloak (the poor bloke really thought nobody knew), and thinking this is it, I can have no greater ambition in life.
10. He also remembered forgetting about Mrs. Norris when the Twins discussed opening their shop.
11. He remembered when George had confessed to him his feelings for Angelina, and the pains Fred took to hide his own.
13. He remembered being terribly happy about the ageing potion backfiring, because he knew that George would look much more wrinkled than he would as they grew.
14. He remembered being chased away from the Forbidden Forest with Hagrid, and feeling exhilarated that George had managed to slip into the forest unnoticed.
15. He also remembered secretly tending to George's wounds afterwards, because neither of them could survive the week George would've had to spend in the Hospital Wing otherwise.
16. He remembered when he and George stumbled across a mirror in an unused classroom, and wondered what was so special about it. After all, it only showed them each other.
17. He remembered the fear he'd felt when George's ear had been lost, and the paralysing terror he'd felt at the repulsive attempt at ear-related humour his twin had uttered.
18. He remembered the time they'd whispered to one another that they wouldn't survive without the other, and remembered assuring George that the day would never come.
19. He recalled the spell hitting him squarely in the chest, and a dull ache spread from the point of contact. He'd struggled to get up, but his limbs gave way, sinking…sinking…
20. He remembered seeing George's horrified face in front of him as he fell to the ground, and felt a part of him die as he was unable to comfort his other half.
21. He could see George snicker, reaching a hand out to lift him off the wet mud on the Quidditch pitch after their first practise on the house team.
22. He smiled as he reached towards his brother's hand, and the pain faded away with the beating of his heart.
