James just caused agitation. In her early years at Hogwarts, he would tease her for hanging out with Severus. Just small stuff, like turning her robes different colors. It was nothing compared to what he would do to Severus, but it still caused her agitation.
Then, starting in her fourth year, he caused agitation in a new way- by taking a fancy towards her. He would constantly try to ask her out, no matter how many times she said no. No just wasn't enough. In the halls, grounds, common room- everywhere, she would hear the call of "Hey Evans!"
Soon, in her seventh year, something about him just changed. He didn't seem so repulsive. So, she took his offer of a date. Quickly, they became one of the most popular Hogwarts couples- girls were always pinning after James and guys were always wanting Lily. But, even though she loved him, this relationship opened a new door of agitation. When he wasn't there or with the other Marauders, she was agitated for a completely different reason- he couldn't be there with her.
