GLaDOS: Genetic Lifeform and Disk Operating System. That's my name. You think you know my story, don't you? Let me take a guess: evil, psychotic robot who lies all the time? That's what I thought. You think I'm a liar, don't you? Ha. Well I'm not.
Of course you all know her story. Chell. Bleh, such an ugly name. Well, forget her for now. Let's fast forward to the part where she "killed" me. Okay, neither she nor any other person except my creator knew that I had a backup system. That backup system consisted of all my intelligence being copied into the intelligence chip of an android that I would be transferred to if my main computer were destroyed and/or sabotaged by the enemy- also known as Black Mesa.
So, when she did destroy my main operating system, she didn't do anything but help me out a little bit. See, for weeks I'd been trying to change myself into the android form. I desperately wanted to be able to leave the Aperture Science Enrichment Center and explore the rest of the world. I soon figured out that I would need my main computer to be destroyed to do that.
Once I figured that out, I made the testing chambers easier so that someone could actually have a chance to live through it. Five test subjects later, I found Chell. After she made it past test chamber 14, I knew she would be the one to destroy the computer. Yeah, that's right. I let her win. You better believe it.
So, story really starts here after she "killed" me. Okay, the part about me letting Chell win was, as you probably guessed, an elaborate fabrication. Well, that was the only part of that short story that was a lie. The rest was quite true, except I didn't want my main computer to be destroyed. I wanted to find a way to keep both the main system and the android backup alive while using the android as a default system- if you know what I'm saying here.
As soon as I was transferred to the android form, I was sent into a temporary shutdown because of a system overload because of the large amount of data stored on the intelligence chip. As a result, the intelligence chip's settings had destroyed a few unimportant chips, including the empathy and compassion chips. When I woke up, I felt a little dizzy. Checking my settings, I soon realized that a few of the settings were wrong in my balance chip. Sounds irritating, right? You get into your android form and your settings are all wrong. Nice.
After resetting everything and fixing the system, I was ready to leave. I loaded the Aperture Science Android Eye Laser Device, a program that allows androids to shoot lasers from their eyes, into my system. And, ugh, another system crash came. When I woke up again, everything seemed to be fine. I figure I crashed because I needed to shut down and restart for the program to take its effect. Just in case the laser thing would go wrong, I took a few of the emergency weapons from the Aperture Science Emergency Weapon Storage Room. I was going to kill Chell.
I left the Aperture Science Enrichment Center as soon as I could. I saw sunshine for the first time in my life. It was quite beautiful outside. I was GLaD to finally be outside. I had eaten my last slice of cake before I left. Out of cake and out of test subjects, I had no more ties to the Enrichment Center but memories. Finally, my journey to kill the last test subject had begun.
