Chapter 24 of The Giver
Chapter 23 ends with something like "Jonas saw lights and then it all faded into blackness" or something.

He woke up. Something had changed, not in the obvious way that the color had appeared, but he sensed it. Keeping his eyes closed, Jonas breathed in. He smelled dirt. Dirt! What a glorious word. After days of nothing but snow he welcomed the scent like a child welcomes a gift at Christmas. Christmas... Suddenly Jonas knew where he was. A light-speed repetition of the last weeks' events raced through his mind and came to one conclusion: he'd made it to Elsewhere. That's what had changed. The Sameness was no longer the same. There was more than the normal Community smells, he heard indistinct noises from the distance, and he could sense light, bright light, from under his closed eyelids. Feelings of relief, of victory and yet dread for what had happened in the Community and what was to happen to him in his new surroundings swept through Jonas, overwhelming him. Not once in his year of training could he have Received a memory to prepare him for this. A cold cloth landed on his forehead. He jerked in surprise, for his eyes were still closed and he wasn't aware of another being near him. Slowly he began to open his eyes but squinted because of the bright light. "It's all right, Jonas. It's just water." Jonas sat up like a bolt of lighting, his eyes, half adjusted to the light, flew open wide. "Who are you?" he asked, although he knew the answer as soon as he set eyes on her. "I'm Fiona. Do you remember me?" "F-f-fiona! What... you're old... I mean..." "Yes, Jonas. I'm an adult. Can you guess what has happened?" Her voice was so soothing, so knowing, so gentle. Jonas struggled to think. Her voice had emotions. feelings. This couldn't be the Community. Why was he here? Had he changed... "Wait. I can't be here. I changed the Community, so-" "You didn't change it, you eliminated it. All the rules disappeared. Everyone gained feelings from the memories that you let go which hit us so hard. Little by little we continued to destroy the Community's Sameness, and the Elders couldn't stop us. Jonas, this is the future." Jonas knew that, somehow. He looked around the room. He was laid on some kind of steel mattress in the center of a room lined by counters littered with papers. Fiona was wearing a white coat, not unlike the one from a memory of a scientist that had been given to him. "Oh. So you all are aware now? Can you see colors? Can you feel emotions?" "Yes. All of us. From the memories you gave us we built a new society, with a new leadership, and lots and lots of color. Thank you, Jonas." "What happened to me?" "You... Jonas, the journey in the snow, it... it killed you," she stuttered, "and I've just figured out how to retract your essence, your mind, from the preserved body. If you'll notice, you have a somewhat new body." His mind froze with shock. He numbly looked down. At the hands, the arms and feet that weren't his. He felt the face of someone else. "Whose body is this?" he asked, in a flat and toneless voice. "Someone you don't know. I thought it would be easier for you than if you came in someone like Gabe's body." "Oh. Thank you for bringing me here, Fiona. Goodbye."
