Spoilers: Too Tough To Die
Author: Traci
Summary: Filler scene for Season 1's "Too Tough To Die".
Author Notes: This is my first CSI fic so please bear with me if there are any incorrect facts and such. I'm still catching up. But it bugged the heck out of me that there was no Grissom/Catherine scene after the confrontation with Eddie!!!! So I made my own.

Always There
Gil Grissom stood his ground in the hallway making sure Eddie left. For a brief moment, he wondered if his friendship with Catherine had caused more problems between her and Eddie but Grissom quickly shook those thoughts out of his mind. There had been bigger problems than Eddie's suspicions about his relationship with Catherine.
Passing a quick glare at those gawking out the window of the lab, he headed down the hall to where he knew he'd find his CSI agent.
"Catherine?" he called out softly, slowly opening the door to the shared locker room. "You in here?"
A soft, muffled sob was his answer.
Walking in, he found her sitting on the floor in a far corner of the room. He stood there taking in the sight before him before walking over and sitting on the floor beside her. "He's gone," Grissom told her.
She merely nodded.
"I know I should be saying something like 'don't bring it to work' or something..."
At that she lifted her head and with her eyes dared him to say such.
Grissom smiled at her. "But I'm not. He brought it here, not you." He took a deep breath as his smile faded. "Cath, I know you had an abusive marriage but... what I saw out there. Has it always been like that?"
She nodded once again. "Yeah," she whispered.
"Yet you still love him." It was a statement, not a question.
Catherine shrugged. "I can't explain it, Gil. I mean, I know I deserve better, that's why I'm getting the divorce..."
"Would you be getting this divorce if you hadn't caught him cheating on you though?"
Her blue eyes raged.
"I'm only saying, you stayed with him for a long time. If he abused you like that, or worse I'm assuming, why did it take him cheating on you to push you to divorce?"
She opened her mouth to respond, but closed it again to think. Finally, she said, "I don't know. For Linsdey's sake maybe, though I know she certainly doesn't need to grow up in a house where her father does that to her mother. I guess... I guess I just didn't want to fail at my marriage like I have in so many other things in my life."
Grissom put her arm around her and pulled her close. "You made mistakes, Catherine, you haven't failed."
She smiled and looked up at him. "Thank you, by the way."
He smiled back. "Couldn't have a crime scene in my own building you know." Grissom stood up and held out his hand for Catherine.
She took it and stood inches away from him after he pulled her up.
"You going to be okay?" he whispered.
"Yeah."
"If you need anything..."
She smiled once again. "I know where to find you. I, uh... I have to get back to Warrick."
Grissom nodded.
Without a thought, Catherine placed a soft kiss on his cheek. "Thank you for being there and watching out for me," she whispered before heading back to the lab.
Standing alone in the locker room, Grissom sighed. No matter what happened with Eddie or anyone or anything else, he would always watch out for Catherine Willows.
