If there was once thing Natalie was always afraid of, it was nightmares. She remembered when she was little and she would have nightmares. Usually, the parents would come and comfort the child and such…but she never got any comforting. Her parents were always too busy. Asleep or at the hospital or having a moment. She would sit in her bed and cry to herself, knowing that her parents wouldn't even notice. She would just cry herself back to sleep and hope that the dream was over.
But even years later she couldn't stand her nightmares. One night she remembered waking up with a jolt from her dreams. She was breathing heavily and crying. She soon felt a pair of strong arms holding her down as she looked next to her.
It was Henry…she had fallen asleep in his arms. "What's wrong?" He asked her, his voice raspy from just waking up.
She shook her head and look him in the eyes. "I…I had a nightmare."
He smiled and pulled her closer to him, allowing her to hide her face in the crook of his neck. He rubbed her back soothingly and kissed her, whispering. "It's ok…it's just a dream…"
She wrapped her arms around him, making sure he didn't let her go. "I know…but-"
"Shh…" he kissed her again and held her tighter, like he was afraid to lose her. "You're safe now…I'm right here…"
She felt the warmth of the embrace around her as she nodded…And within a few minutes, she fell back asleep, his arms still surrounding her.
And she didn't have another nightmare for the rest of the night.
