Author's Note: I started this bit a while back, and it wasn't quite what I wanted, so I left it alone. Then I saw the week three challenge on the livejournal community, redid the beginning, and this came out. The challenge was "ah, to be young and foolish." :)
Advantages?
"Ah, to be young and foolish," Nico observed. Dani cringed as he walked up to where she had been hiding. Until he scared the crap out of her, she had been enjoying herself in that forbidden motherly activity of spying on her daughter's date. Lindsay had been heartbroken last week, but now she had a new friend who was keen on making her forget all of that.
If only that made her forget about her mother's boyfriend. That situation with JD was still kind of ugly and definitely awkward.
"You really need to stop coming—stop sneaking around—in the middle of the night," Dani said, looking at Nico and shaking her head. "I thought we had this discussion before. Several times. It infuriates me when you do that."
"There are some that find my ability to come and go without attracting notice an advantage," he said, shrugging slightly. She didn't know why she never managed to get through to him. She was tired of this. It was mysterious and even intriguing at first, but now it was just aggravating.
She decided to try a different tactic. "And what about the women in your life? Don't you terrify them every time you make them jump out of their skin?"
"Some women find what I do attractive."
"What, married ones?" she couldn't help scoffing. Why would anyone appreciate that? She found it annoying, if not downright creepy. "They like that you can sneak in and out without anyone noticing?"
"A woman does not have to be married to appreciate my talents," he disagreed, apparently refusing to be insulted. "It is sometimes to an advantage not to have everyone know of the comings and goings of the lady of the house."
She looked at him, her mouth opening but words did not come out. She was only able to stare after him as he walked away. Her mind was going a mile a minute. She couldn't believe she was thinking about it like that. She had JD—but she'd never live down the phone book incident in the kitchen and that made Nico's implication have more appeal than it ever would have before.
She shook her head. She could not think about it like that. Wait, why had Nico come here anyway? He had better have a good reason for this. She frowned and put her hands into the pockets of her robe. She wasn't cold—the ideas conjured up after that brief conversation had warmed her with desire and embarrassment and even a bit of shame, given the circumstances.
She pulled her hand out and shook her head as she saw the paper he had slipped in there. Passing notes, were they? Maybe there was a bit of the young and foolish still left in Nico. She unfolded the letter and read it.
She shook her head angrily. Oh, yes, there were advantages to coming and going so quietly all right.
