As the nurse handed David to Daphne, she held him in her arms tightly and kissed him on the forehead. She had been in the hospital since yesterday afternoon, but only part of that time had been spent with her son. Once the nurse was gone, Daphne whispered, "Hello, David." He slept silently, wrapped in a soft blanket. "Your Dad just left a little while ago. I made him leave. He hadn't got any sleep, and here he was watching me lie in bed all day." She spoke to him calmly, almost in a whisper. "I really do love him, and I know you will too. He's so devoted to his family." Daphne paused, glancing around the room. "It's a nice room, isn't it? It's a bit quiet when I'm by meself, but that's alright. I don't really like hospitals much, but I suppose it's not so bad now." She smiled at him.
"You're going to have such a wonderful life. Me brothers and I were all born into a poor household, with quite a lot of chores, siblings, and hard work. It'll be a bit different for you, thank goodness. We're quite well off, and I do believe you're going to be our only child. I suppose you'll probably get used to eating all sorts of fancy foods and dressing up real nice.
"You know, it's funny. Your Dad was going around talking to all of his high-society friends about the best hospital to have you in, and out you came in a vet's office. Well, now I can tell people that I had a baby without any drugs." Daphne chuckled a little bit. "It was worth it. You are simply adorable, David." She kissed him on the cheek, and as she did she heard a knock on the door and in came Roz and Alice.
"Hey Daphne," said Roz. Daphne smiled. "Hello Roz. It's good to see you." She turned to Alice and added, "And you too, dear." The little girl grinned and said softly, "Hi, Aunt Daphne. She slowly approached the hospital bed, looked over at the baby, and whispered, "Hi, David." The two women smiled at each other, and Roz went to grab Alice's hand. "Alice, show Daphne what you brought for David." Alice gave Daphne a gift bag. When she looked, she discovered a hand made sock monkey. She smiled. "Oh, I had one of these when I was little. It's cute, Alice, thank you!" Alice smiled. "She found it in the store and thought it was perfect for him," said Roz. "So, on a different topic, where's Niles?" She asked. "He's at home," Daphne replied.
"Huh. I didn't think he'd ever leave this room."
"I told him to go get some sleep, and he did. I'll admit I was a little surprised, too."
"Maybe he's just eager to please you. After all, you did just have his child in the place were dogs get check-ups."
Daphne smiled. "Oh, Roz, would you like to hold him?"
"I would love to." Roz took the small baby in her arms and then looked at Alice. "Daphne, do you remember when she was this small?"
"I sure do. That was a while ago, wasn't it?"
"Yeah, but it doesn't seem like it." She reached her free hand out to her daughter for a hug. "I would assume Frasier has been by to see you?" She went on.
"Oh yes, he's the one responsible for those flowers over there." She motioned to a rather large bouquet of flowers in a striking vase sitting on a table in the corner.
"Wow. How much do you think those cost?"
"Oh, God knows. Too much, I know that. It was nice of him to bring it by, though."
"Yeah, he can be thoughtful sometimes, you'll have to give him credit."
Daphne nodded.
"Well Daphne, it's getting late, so I probably need to take Alice home and get her in bed."
"Thank you for coming by, Roz. You too, Alice."
Roz handed David back to his mother, said goodbye and left.
Daphne turned to her son. "Now, where were we?"
