_letter one_

The postman was late this morning.

The lessons started in about five minutes and Charity Hallet hadn't even packed her school bag.

She just stood in front of the school gate, arms around herself to keep her warm, waiting for the post.

Her breath frozed in front of her nose and made some cute Whorls.

Charity heard a bike entering the school gardens.

Full of hope she stepped forward, but then...

it was only Madam Juled.

"Miss Hallet.", she said reproachful, "Shouldn't you be in class right now?!"

Charity didn't dare to look her teacher in the eyes, "I'm waiting for the postman."

Silence.

Madam Juled sighed, "Three minutes. No more, no less. See you in class. In time!"

She opened the front door, "Don't miss!"

And Charity was alone again.

This winter was a cold one.

How Phin might feel now?

He didn't even has a home with a warm fireplace.

In this moment Charity heard the small bell from the postman ringing.

It was their tegn.

She jumped up and ran forward.

There he was.

"D'you have a letter for me?", she asked exited.

The postman nodded, "Of course. And you'll bring me your letter tomorrow morning?"

"I will.", Charity smiled, "Thank you so much, Mr. Paulsen."

She waved back, "Until tomorrow!"

The letter in her hand felt warm and heavie.

Charity teared the front door open and ran through the floors to her room.

Her bag stood next to her bed.

She took it and made her way to the classroom.

The other girls still sat in their places.

Charity sighed, whilest sinking on her chair, unfolding the letter.

She began to read.

Dear Charity!

There's so much i've to tell you.

I sell newspapers now. Not the best business, of course but it's enough for one meal a day.

I'm living with the streetchildren now.

Did i told you about the girl, giving me an apple?

Well...here's the story;

I didn't sell much that day and hadn't eat anything since two days. So i decided to...well...steal a bread from the baker.

But he ran after me and catched me up.(I still have bruises;) )

So, he took the bread and left me alone with my hunger.

I thought it would've be the end.

But there was that little girl with a disfigured face and scars around the eyes.

She gave me her apple.

So...i'm living with her now.

She doesn't talk much, but i like her.

She's extraordinary.

"Heaven on earth.", they call her.

Well...did you read the new Tom-Thumb book? 'Cause i did and i just want somebody to talk with about that book and the great last chapters.

Won't forget your birthday!

Since the next letter,

In Love,

Phineas

"Miss Hallet?!", Mister Adams voice permeated her mind, "Can you please answer me, Miss?"

Charity sighed, "I'm sorry Mr. Adams. I didn't take attention."

She tried to fold Phineas' letter quietly under he desk, but Emma, that little stupid girl, mauled on Mr. Adams.

"She read a letter. Like every second day."

Charity gazed at Emma with an angry look.

Mr. Adams stood up, "Do you, Miss Hallet?...unbelievable!"

He stopped next to Charitys table and leaned forward, "The letter. Now."

Charity started panicking.

She bited her bottom lip, "No."

Mr. Adams raised one eyebrow, "Huh? What did you say?!"

Charity took a deep breath, "I said no. It's private."

But Mr. Adams leaned more forward and took the letter out of her hands.

With a triumphantly smile, he went back to the front and unfolded the letter.

His look skimmed the text, mumbling something.

Then he raised his voice, "Streetchildren? What's that for a guy?!"

The girls laughed.

Charity didn't.

"His father died months ago.", she whispered.

Tears shone in her canthus.

She bited her bottom lip even more afraid of start crying in front of the other girls.

_letter two_

Dear Phin!

I love the sound of your story. It's beautiful.

If i'm back home i'd like to meet the girl. I'm sure i'd like her too...if you do!

You won't believe, want Mr. Adams --one ofy teachers- did;

I had waiting for your later the whole morning and it just came shortly before the lessons started, so i read it in class.

But one of the other girls mauled to Mr. Adams and he took the letter!

He read it in front of the whole class and now i've got some extra work to do.

I hate him! I hate this school!

I just wanna come back to you...we had so much fun together.

I'll spend my birthday at home...but there's no time to meet.

That whole "family-thing"...

So send my letter to my home, not to school.

I miss you!

In Love,

Charity

She closed her filler and read the letter again.

"What are you doing?", Alma asked.

Alma was her roommate and the only nice girl at the whole school.

"I'm writing a letter.", Charity answered.

Alma jumped up, exciting shining in her eyes, "To your Lover?"

Charity shook her head, "Phin is not my Lover! We're just friends."

Alma laughed sarcastically, "Yes of course!'Just friends' with much things to talk about."

Charity closed the letter and sank on her bed, "Yes. Much things..."

She fall down on her pillows backwards and stared up.

Lights were dancing on the ceiling.

Charity closed her eyes.

"'Cause every night i lie in bed.

The brightest colours fill my head.

A million dreams are keepin' me awake.", she sang with a small voice.

"What?", Alma asked interested.

Charity sighed sadly, "That's the song... Our song."
