It's dark. I can't see...is that normal...wait...dad? DAD IT'S ME!
Ether jolted awake in his bed. The young 8 year old was panting heavily, drenched in sweat. He looked around seeing no longer the darkness, but his own room, with neat organized shelves and blue walls.
Much like the child he was, Ether called out for his mother;
"M-Mama!"
Tears poured down his cheeks as he cried out again;
"Mama! "
Within a minute a tall woman with black wild hair walked into Ethers room and hugged him close after she sat down on his bed
"Ether..." She said with a gentle voice, "What's wrong hun? Did you have a nightmare? "
The young boy shook his head "Nuh uh...I saw Dad...I tried reaching out for him but..." he said looking down at his hands
His mother, Minerva, pulled him in for another hug.
"Ether...sweetie...I know it's hard. I miss your father too, but we have to move on. Your father wouldn't want us sitting around and moping." she said stroking her son's head comfortingly
You see, Ether's father was a great man. A researcher in exploring the vast terrain of their homeland. Sadly, a month ago it was discovered that he and his entire crew had went missing. Only 2 weeks into the investigation, they were pronounced dead. His father's ship and body were never found. Minerva could see the distraught and sadness in his little face. Minerva patted him on the back then got up.
"I know something that will make you feel a lot better." she said and got up, exiting the room
Only a couple minutes later she returned with a large box.
"Your father wanted to save this for your birthday...but I think you deserve to have it now." she said placing the box by Ethers bed.
Ether crawled out of his covers to open the box and his eyes widened. Inside the box was a small sea foam-green robot. It had small detachable oval like arms, a screw on his head, and one oval eye and one rectangular eye. Ether carefully pulled him out of the box. It was lifeless and cold.
The young boy spoke nervously as if the little mechanical humanoid was haunting;
"Um...t-turn on...please?"
The robot slowly lit up and hovered in mid air.
"Hello! I'm Tincan! At your service, Ether Mendoza." the robot spoke with a cheerful tone
Ether hugged him after a moment after realizing it was just silly-looking and friendly plus he felt a sudden need to hold something for comfort.
"Hi Tincan!" he said with a weak smile
"Your father built him just for you Ether. He wanted to make sure that you had a little friend always by your side." said Miverva with a chuckle
"I-I miss him so much..." said Ether with a smile yet tears still threatened to spill
Minerva once again went to hug him whispering softly;
"Shh shh...I know...try to get some sleep, okay sweetie?"
Ether nodded still hugging Tincan and said;
"Okay mama..."
Minerva left the room and Ether crawled back into bed staring out of his window to see the polar night of Antartica.
He looked down at Tin Can and said;
"I think I'm gonna have a lot of cool times with you...right?"
"Agreed." said the little robot, looking up at his new owner
The young boy cuddled with the small robot and soon finally drifted off to sleep.
