a/n: Story of my life; who I am is up to you.

disclaimer: I don't own any of it, except the idea.

If there was one thing that Gold was known for, it was his way of never being capable of having something that was solely his. It was almost as if he was coming even this close to getting his hands on something, someone would sweep in out of nowhere and snatch it away, the sneak.

Take Crystal for example, Gold liked her; he really did, and not is the lust sort of way. That all changed though when Silver had officially entered the picture and joined the duo to become the trio they were known as. You see, turns out that Silver liked Crystal as well and that could only mean one thing. That's right, Silver got the girl and left Gold heartbroken which he covered up with false congratulations and an indifferent grin.

Then there was Blue.

She was the eccentric, flirtatious, beautiful girl who moved forward in determination without a second thought. Her perfection was something Gold would often find himself thinking. Though, there were objections to his crush, like Silver's rants about Gold to stay away from her or else and Crystal's words of warning about girls like Blue. In no time though, Gold had convinced the girl to be his friend and spent every waking moment together in his newly colored world.

Over the course of the time they spent together, there was one thing that Gold cherished over all the rest – like the nights they spent on the roof of Blue's house smoking, or when one would go in for a hug and give a noogie instead – it was the secret smiles they shared. These smiles, they were rare, but meant the world to him since he was the only one to get them.

Yet, as the story would go, Blue was pinning after someone other than Gold, whose name was Green and was the handsome devil of Pallet Town. It would seem that Gold went and let the one thing he truly wanted slip through his fingers like sand.

Over time, as Gold and Blue drifted away once Green was in the picture, people would often say how he wasted his time knowing what kind of a girl she was. He didn't care though, he knew she wasn't like that, he knew she only acted that way to chase away her fears and that she really did care about other's feelings and wanted her own fairytale. All the while, he only had one thing he missed out of all the memories they shared, and it was those smiles.

He'd do it all over again – the heartbreak – just for the chance to receive another one of their secret smiles.
