note to readers: if you're on AO3, please consider following me there instead (same username, archiveofourown DOT org / users / justjoy) – fuller explanation on my profile page, but the rationale is basically that FFN is just... a real pain to use on many fronts, honestly. don't worry, I will continue to post DCMK works here, it's just that I feel AO3 (and/or Tumblr, where I go by presumenothing if you're so inclined) provide much better user experiences for all of us, plus I'm usually far more responsive on these platforms as well – asks on Tumblr are your best bet if you want to reach me directly, and I've enabled anonymous asks so feel free to come say hi even if you don't have an account!

TL;DR – justjoy on AO3, presumenothing on Tumblr, come find me there. as always, thank you for your support, and hope you enjoy!

Consciousness returns in snatches of sound and light that slip through Yui's grasp when she tries to catch them, but one persists, eventually.

"Yui-san?" someone says, and the voice is familiar, if only she could just

"Yui-san. Can you hear me?"

Yui blinks her eyes open to find black spots dancing across half of her vision. She feels numb all over, and it takes her a worryingly long moment to come up with a name.

Morofushi-keibu? she tries to say, except that her lips aren't quite moving correctly.

True enough, Koumei's looking down at her, face unusually grim even for him, and Yui remembers the avalanche with a sudden jolt of fear.

Kan-chan –

Yui registers, belatedly, the sound of beeping machines, the sterile white glare of the walls.

She's in the hospital. And given that she had collapsed in the precinct… "How long?" Yui manages to ask this time.

"You've been unconscious for almost thirty hours," Koumei answers in brisk tones. "We were worried, Yui-san."

She shivers, teeth chattering, even though the room is warm. "I'm not the one – " you need to be worried about, Yui means to say, except that she can't find the air.

"I know," Koumei replies, having apparently caught her meaning anyway. "But Kansuke-kun would have my hide if I left you alone like this. And there hasn't been an official search party to join."

No search party means – it means that –

Yui feels ice settling into her veins, in more ways than one. "He's not dead."

"I know," Koumei says again, and she now hears the note of urgency in his voice. "But we're the only two people who still believe that. I need you to tell me everything you can, Yui-san."

Kan-chan's alive, but barely. It's a struggle to focus, and worse yet to form words, but if this helps at all Yui will gladly do it.

"It's cold," Yui whispers, and as a twinge of pain makes itself known, "His leg's injured. Can't move properly."

"You've stopped shivering, so the hypothermia is worsening," Koumei notes, and Yui can only hope that it will be enough.

If they're too late –

"You have to – " Yui says in a gasp, and why can't she catch her breath? " – find Kan-chan. Please."

"I will. I swear it." Koumei sets his badge down on the bedside table, and the sound rings loud in her ears. There's only one way out of this. "Take care of yourself, Yui-san."

"Go," Yui answers instead, and waits until Koumei turns to leave before allowing her eyes to close.

We're coming for you, Kan-chan, she thinks, quiet and desperate. Stay with me. Please.

Then she falls back into cold darkness, and knows no more.
