Carlisle's point of view
The news of his death had silenced our world. No-one had spoken since. We could see how broken everyone was. His brothers faces were solemn, their eyes lost. They had returned while he – hadn't. His sisters were empty. Alice had sobbed for two hours. Rosalie wouldn't look up. And Bella his – everything. She was asleep on the couch. My wife and I sat across from her. She hadn't moved since. She hadn't cried or done anything. I assumed she was in shock. We sat – me holding Esme – and tried to make this all a dream, make it all go away. We were heartbroken, but so worried about Bella aswell. He had been everything to her. We had seen what happened when they were apart, and now he wasn't coming back.
Esme lifted my hands and stood, looking at me then walking over to Bella. I sat up and watched. She sat beside her and hugged her. Keeping her arms wrapped around her. I could see the misery lining her face as she looked at the poor young girl before her. I went to them, knowing it was getting too much for Esme. Sitting beside them I pulled her to me and she leaned against me, beginning to shake. We sat and I stroked her hair and closed my eyes – it was going to be a long forever.
