Hey Lovelies! This is my first fanfiction of one of my absolute favorite cartoons of all time. Please read and write constructive criticism that is NOT offensive on my behalf. Thank you for reading and enjoy!
Disclaimer: I do not own Hey Arnold! That belongs to Craig Bartlett. Also I do not own the song. It belongs to Pink.
What am I doing?
The blond looked around the chorus room and sighed. Heck, she hardly knew what she did these days. Everything has been a blur since… since…
She pushed the thought to the back of her head. She didn't need to think about him now. She could do that later, not when she was surrounded by her friends. They worried about her too much. Right now what she needed to do was concentrate on what exercises the teacher wanted them to do now.
Even if she didn't want to.
Hillwood High was just as she expected. Cliques, bullies, teachers and what other bullshit they had in movies. She honestly thought the gang was going to split up and go different ways.
And boy, how she ended up being wrong.
Oddly, her 4th grade class made their own little clique through the years. They were still there through thick and thin. They defied the social rankings of high school and inevitably became the most popular kids in school. Gerald and Phoebe were FINALLY official. And so were Harold and Patty, Stinky and Lila, and oddly (even though she knew it all along) Rhonda and "Curly", who now went by Thaddeus but still kept his nickname for close friends. They were family. And family doesn't leave each other behind. They were family through Eugene's coming out, Sid's baby mama abandoning him and his child, and the arrest of Big Bob due to the abuse of Miriam and herself.
She shuttered, trying that day behind her, something she often had to do in order not to bring up those feelings again. Imagine what Arnold…..
STOP! What did we discuss? He is NOT the center of your universe, you can't have him occupy your thoughts all the time! You can't live in the past Helga old girl!
Of course she couldn't. Besides, didn't she change herself into the person she really is? Didn't she change herself for the better without him? She couldn't expect him to still have the same feelings, they've been apart for too long. She had to find a way to move on. Move on...
Sigh.
"Okay class!" exclaimed the overly perky choir teacher, "It's time for open mic! Who would like to go first?"
The gang looked at one another. This was their only class together, so they weren't shy to sing in front of their peers. But that wasn't the point. The point was, no one wanted to sing today, at ALL.
"Okay, I guess this means I have to choose randomly!" she sung. Her cheeriness could even give Lila a cavity.
The class groaned with annoyance.
"Awwwwwwww Oh come on guys! It's not that bad!" she whimpered in a baby voice."Let's seeeeeeee. Hmmmmmmmmm….. oh Helga G. Pataki!"
Helga sighed loudly as she stood up. Her long blond hair cascaded down her back as she stood at 5'6 with slender curves, two eyebrows, and piercing blue eyes.
"Do I have to sing?"
"You have to." The choir teacher responded, "It's a part of your grade and I would hate for you to get less than an A".
The blonde looked towards her friends. She saw thumbs up from Phoebe and a wink from Gerald, his arm slung around Phoebe's shoulders. Sid and Stinky whistled from behind them as she spotted a gentle nod from Rhonda, and a "Go" from Lila. The others just smiled.
"Okay, I guess…", she replied as her makeshift family gave her around of applause.
She walked towards the piano and started playing the opening melody to a song that always reminded her of him. She sang in her rich, beautiful, and yet sad alto.
Right from the start
You were a thief
You stole my heart
And I your willing victim
As she sang, The door open and a familiar green-eyed blonde slipped through the door. Rhonda started to gasp, but he hushed her and listened to the beautiful voice.
I let you see the parts of me
That weren't all that pretty
And with every touch you fixed them
Helga frowned at the tears that started to well up in her eyes. She needed to hold them in. She could cry into her pillow tonight before she slept. Not now.
Now you've been talking in your sleep, oh, oh
Things you never say to me, oh, oh
Tell me that you've had enough
Of our love, our love
Helga quickly dried the tears that escaped her eyes so her comrades wouldn't be worried. Then she continued.
Just give me a reason
Just a little bit's enough
Just a second we're not broken just bent
And we can learn to love again
It's in the stars
It's been written in the scars on our hearts
We're not broken just bent
And we can learn to love again
As she was starting to keep on going, another voice replaced her.
I'm sorry I don't understand
Where all of this is coming from
I thought that we were fine
Almost stopping her fingers, she tried to pinpoint the voice that joined her.
Oh, we had everything
Your head is running wild again
My dear we still have everything
And it's all in your mind
Yeah, but this is happening
Helga looked up to see her who joined her for a duet and gasped, "Arnold.." she whispered.
You've been having' real bad dreams, oh, oh
You still lie so close to me, oh, oh
He smiled at her, and she almost didn't have to voice to continue singing.
There's nothing more than empty sheets
Between our love, our love
Oh, our love, our love
He looked at her, pleading with his eyes. As she started to get up, Arnold sat her back down again and kept on playing on the piano.
"No" he whispered.
Just give me a reason
Just a little bit's enough
Just a second we're not broken just bent
And we can learn to love again
I never stopped
You're still written in the scars on my heart
You're not broken just bent
And we can learn to love again
Helga's eyes watered again as she listened to him sing, whatever leftover pieces of her poorly mended heart coming together.
Oh, tear ducts and rust
I'll fix it for us
We're collecting dust
But our love's enough
Arnold wiped away the tears falling on her soft, pale cheeks.
You're holding it in
You're pouring a drink
No nothing is as bad as it seems
We'll come clean!
Arnold reached for her elbow and gave it a squeeze. His eyes told her all she needed to hear.
Just give me a reason
Just a little bit's enough
Just a second we're not broken just bent
And we can learn to love again
It's in the stars
It's been written in the scars on our hearts
That we're not broken just bent
And we can learn to love again
She looked at him and smiled. A wave of understanding passed through them as they grinned at each other.
Just give me a reason
Just a little bit's enough
Just a second we're not broken just bent
And we can learn to love again
It's in the stars
It's been written in the scars on our hearts
That we're not broken just bent
And we can learn to love again
Phoebe leaned her head on Gerald's shoulder. "I told you Arnold will handle it."
"Yep", said Gerald, while he looked on at his best friend who finally got the girl, "He did alright."
Helga blushed at Arnold as he pulled her off the piano and faced her to him.
Oh, we can learn to love again
Oh, we can learn to love again
"Welcome home, Football-head." Helga teased.
"I'm always home when I'm with you, Helga." Arnold declared cockily. "Be mine".
She rolled her eyes and blushed as Arnold chuckled and pulled her closer. "I thought you'd never ask, Arnoldo"
Oh, oh, that we're not broken just bent
And we can learn to love again
The class (with their teary-eyed choir teacher included) cheered and hollered as the new couple shared a kiss.
