Dwayne fell asleep on Frank on the way back to Albuquerque. Frank didn't mind, even though he had to brace himself against the window and the weight put a strain on his wrist. When they got to the motel and Dwayne saw where specks of blood had seeped through Frank's bandages, Dwayne told him off for it, and Frank felt happier than he had in a while.

The cot starts to bother Frank's back after a few days, but he doesn't tell Sheryl. They have money troubles to spare, and he doesn't want anyone to worry. Frank can't hide it from Dwayne, though, and Dwayne insists that they switch beds. After the first night, Dwayne forgets that his uncle now sleeps in his bed, and the two end up sharing Dwayne's twin size comforter. Neither has ever slept so well.

Frank will move away after a few months of enduring his sister's husband and the constant parade of fried chicken. Dwayne will insist that he is fine for exactly twenty-three hours before he will show up on Frank's new doorstep with a duffel bag and bloodshot eyes. Frank will immediately rush out and hug Dwayne because he knows that neither of them got any sleep last night. They will spend the rest of their lives not questioning why they are so comforted by the other's drooling, hogging the covers, or grinding his teeth, and they will never ask for a different fate.
