A/N: This story is post 3x13 musings from Castle's POV...just drabble... :)
The cuts on his knuckles, where he'd split them against Lockwood's cheek, were scabbed over now. They stood out- a dull red against the pale skin of his hand. Their accompanying ache would fade, he knew, but the cuts themselves would scar. A tangible memento, a visible declaration. Each jagged mark on his knuckles was a promise- a promise of loyalty, of bravery, of strength. A promise to himself...a promise to her.
I'd get you out
I've got your back
It's not about the books anymore
I'll keep coming back
Partners.
Always.
Like Jacob Marley, he was forging chains, but his were of a different sort. He wore chains forged of the strongest steel, chains wrought from each scar and every promise. They wrapped around his heart and pledged it unconditionally to her- bound him to her link by link.
And no matter how many times she dismissed him with a simple "Night," he would never stop answering her with "Until tomorrow."
And each time was a promise- a link in the chain that bound them.
