In Loving Memory Of

Ruby's cape whipped in the wind as she knelt in the snow. Her hand gently caressed the tombstone, tracing each letter in the name. A tear slipped off her face, tinkling like a star before shattering upon the ground.

Those words cut her her heart, sharper than any weapon.

"In Loving Memory of. . .

Summer Rose."

Ruby choked back a cough. She just wished she'd have had more time. The lonesome feeling burned her insides as much as the cold wind burnt her exterior.

No matter what she did. . .

Nothing could ever take that place.

"I miss you."

Ruby glanced up and, briefly, could have sworn she saw her mother standing there, giving an apologetic smile. But the vision was gone as briefly as she had seen it, leaving Ruby still distraught.

Another glistening orb was dashed against the cold snow. Steadying her breath, Ruby pushed to her feet. Her hand still hung back on the tombstone, as if to leave it was to admit that what it represented was truly gone.

A sob caught in her throat as her boots crunched the white ground. Her right hand clutched at her cloak, pulling the red material closer, seemingly hoping it could ward off the sadness.

Her left hand clutched Crescent Rose close. The weapon seemed to ease her fears, reminding her of Summer and radiating a sense of security.

Steeling herself, Ruby pressed her boots into the soft snow, pressing forward. Her breath puffed out, visible in the frigid atmosphere as she reached the edge of the woods. A Beowolf's howl rose in the distance but Ruby noted that it appeared to be pretty far off.

Another howl as she reached the edge of the forest.

Her scythe spilled out in front of her in greeting of the Beowolf's hat awaited her. She pushed down her emotions and pushed back her hood as a grin split her face. Maybe a fight would do her some good.

Author's Note; For those of you who don't know, the creator of RWBY (As well as several other projects, such as Haloid, animator in Red Vs. Blue, and Dead Fantasy) and voice of Ren, Monty Oum died recently. He had a severe allergic reaction during a routine surgery procedure. at only thirty-three years old Rooster Teeth had asked that his fans create something to honor him.

This short drabble was my response to it.

Just a short note, I was writing long before I knew of Monty. But after seeing RWBY, I began to see more of his interviews and panels, things like that. His words, styles, and advice had really made a profound impact on who I am as a creative individual now. While I didn't know him personally, I feel greatly saddened by his death. He was an inspiration to me and others and he'll be missed.

So I dedicate this in loving memory of Monty Oum.
