A/N: Written for the Digimon Flash Bingo, #635 - prompt: There was only one road she could take now. Looking at Norun/Yggdrasil from the Digimon Next (manga) universe.

Return of the Goddess

She had always known that she would have to return to her previous existence: that benefactor of the Digital World, looking on from afar. But she'd enjoyed her time as Mikihara Norun, and part of her didn't want it to end anytime soon.

And then it had ended, far too soon and without her own violation. For it was Barbamon who snatched her away, locked her away in the ? because he couldn't risk destroying her. She was Yggdrasil's consciousness after all; destroying her would also destroy the body – the body Barbamon had snatched while she was in the human world. And maybe it had been foolish, to put so much, such an integral part, of consciousness into an alternate host. With herself with the main part of the consciousness and in the human world, there hadn't been much to stand in his way.

But that gave her a little freedom, a little hope: that she could still act, still find a way to escape the future Barbamon was slowly setting into flow. She knew it was her fault: she'd lingered too long in the human world, thought too naively that the shell she'd left behind would not be touched. She hadn't considered a Demon Lord would surpass his prison – but he had, and there was only one thing she could do about it: hold on to hope, until she could pass it on.

And then it would be time to take her mantle up again.
