Old Companions
A reflection piece on Hatake Kakashi.
Disclaimer: I don't own any of them but the versions that live in my head. Kishimoto-sensei is a genius in my mind.

Death was always an interesting subject that came up in ones mind frequently. Or at least it did if you had to face it every day. It wasn't something to fear. Just a subject to reflect on when bored. There was once a time when he had wanted to die on the battlefield. A good death that would bring more meaning to his life then living in uselessness. Many cultures held this train of thought. What good could you bring your village if all you were good at was killing and now you couldn't even continue doing that? Most at this point would take their own lives, go on a suicide run, or change to another career. There was no such thing as retiring without shame because there was no end to the job. You either succeeded recently, or started failing.
But as the years continued to pass and he found himself more deeply engraved in such a situation, he no longer cared what they thought. He had something else to live for and he would never stop carrying out his duty to the village. Let them know he had failed the last mission. No one had died, and he would not break under their scrutiny like his father had.
Kakashi paused in his task of absent fur rubbing to flip the page of his new book. He smirked in amusement at the passage. Sakura was getting good at this. He never thought that out of all his students, she would be the one to pick up the late Ero's habits. A light whine of disapproval came his way for pausing too long. Sighing, he placed the book down and took off his glasses to look over at his companion. A sunglassed face stared back and gave another whine.
Kakashi rubbed at the fresh bandages over his missing sharingan; the medic-nins always found the right place to make it itch the worst. But at least now he no longer felt constantly week, though he missed having Obito around.
He yawned and slouched more heavily against the old tree trunk. Tai watched him for a moment before panting with a grin and stretching out on the available chest, exposing his stomach to the ninja for more rubs. Wrapping his arm around his companion to get at the seemingly itchy underfur, Kakashi was thankful Tai was the only one of the pack that was present. He wasn't sure what he would do with seven attention-starved pups.
Under the cool shade of the large oak, two old companions slept on with no worries of what the future might hold.

Notes:
Tei is the name I gave to the nin-dog that wears sunglasses. I do not know if we have finally been given names to all of them yet or not as I do have the most recent databook that was released. If they have please tell me. I would love to know all their names.
Also feel free to review. I'm trying to improve my writing and I would love suggestions. Especially since I had to fight this one some to make it sound good to me. Hate stress, it always effects my writing.
I also need to remember to thank people for betaing. Thank you Duckie!
