Jesus Take the Wheel
"Stupid traffic," Michelle huffed under her breath. The Christmas Eve traffic edged slowly through interstate 70.
"Thank goodness Joshua is sleeping," Michelle thought as she looked in her review mirror. Her eight month old was sleeping soundly in his green and black checkered car seat.
"Thank-you!" Michele said sarcastically as enough vehicles moved allowing her to pull of onto an exit. She had driven for a while but still had fifty miles to go until she reached her parents home in Cincinnati.
"Oh crap," she exclaimed when she saw the gasoline meter light illuminate on the dashboard "I'll never make it now."
Suddenly her car skidded across a thin sheet of black ice. Snow and ice swirled around her as she spun. She tried desperately to regain control of her car but was unable to. In a haze of panic Michelle saw her baby boy's life hanging by a thread. She knew she was powerless to save him or her for that matter. Finally in an act of pure desperation she threw hands up in the air.
"Jesus, take the wheel
Take it from my hands
Cause I can't do this on my own
I'm letting go
So give me one more chance
To save me from this road I'm on
Jesus, take the wheel"
Miraculously the car slowed and then stopped. Cautiously Michelle eased her car off the black ice and onto the shoulder. "Thank-you Jesus!" After giving her thanks, she suddenly felt unworthy. Her many sins flashed before her eyes, the drugs, pornography, and sex. Looking back at Joshua, her blue eyes welled with tears. She didn't even know who his father was. Joshua was sleeping so soundly, like a little rock.
"He has no idea he could've' been sleeping in Jesus arms tonight."
Joshua wasn't her first child; she had been pregnant with three others, none of them ever made it out of the abortion clinic. She started crying harder, realizing she had been given a second chance at life.
"I'm sorry for the way
I've been living my life
I know I've got to change
So from now on tonight
Jesus, take the wheel
Take it from my hands
Cause I can't do this on my own
I'm letting go
So give me one more chance
To save me from this road I'm on."
A wave of peace washed over her. She found a local Christian radio station, and as she turned onto a new road she sang her redeemed heart out to Amazing Grace.
