Title: Open Ears and Threats

Rating: T

Summary: Takes place sometime after the first season. Gambit is being temporarily held prisoner at the X mansion. Rogue goes down to take him a meal, and it's Romy's first meeting.

Disclaimer: I don't own squat, If I did own it, Romy would have been together from the first episode.

Rogue walked quickly down the long hallway, wanting to get her little assignment done. So far this week it was only her first time bringing down his food. She figured that was Logan's over protective way of keeping her the hell away from that "no good, slimy, piece of shit thief" as Logan liked to refer to him.

Coming upon the door, she balanced the tray in one hand and quickly punched in the code with the other.

"Someone new huh? I see the Badger has finally decided to start showing me off."

"Just shut up and eat, would ya?" Rogue replied irritably as she slid the tray under the door.

"Ahh, a southern belle. Why don't you just keep talking cherie, it's almost like going home." Gambit grinned lazily at her.

Rogue silently raised an eyebrow at Gambit's words. 'No one told me he's a southern boy' she thought as she sat down, her interest in their temporary prisoner peaked.

"A Cajun huh? Well you just keep them ears open sugar, because my voice is the closest you're getting to home for quite a while."

"But how close can I get to you?"

Upon hearing a familiar sknit and growl from the doorway Rogue and Gambit looked up suddenly to see Wolverine standing in the doorway, pointing his claws at Gambit.

"You won't be gettting anywhere near her! Is that clear bub?"

Rolling her eyes, Rogue replied before Gambit could make a smart remark.

"Oh simmer down Logan. I don't need you threatening this Swamp Rat for me. He's in a cell for one, and for two I can handle myself just fine."

"But wouldn't it be more fun if you let me handle you, River Rat?" Gambit's eyes traveled the length of Rogue's body as he said this.

"Death wish much?" Rogue said before whipping around to glare at Logan.

"And just what are you doing down here anywhere Logan? I don't recall you checking up on anyone else that came down here to deliver meals."

Logan didn't answer her question, just shifted his eyes towards Gambit and starting glaring at him again.

"Oh my God! I'm not a kid anymore Logan! And even when I was, I wouldn't let that Swamp Rat charm me into anything!"

Gambit who had watched the whole exchange with fasination while he ate, broke in before Logan could repond.

"I didn't realize I was getting a floor show with my meal today."

"Can it Cajun!"

"You know River Rat you keep calling me by those pet names and I'm gonna start to think you like me."

Rogue sighed in exasperation, as Logan growled and started towards the cell again.

"Oh don't pay him any mind Logan. He's done with his meal, let's just go up and join the rest of the team for lunch."

Logan growled once more but put his claws away and walked out, with Rogue close on his heels. Gambit could hear Logan speak to Rogue before the door shut.

"And I do know that you're not a kid anymore Stripes, but I still worry about you."

Rogue nodded once before stopping suddenly and turning back towards the cell.

"I umm, forgot something. Meet ya upstairs okay."

Running back and typing in the code Rogue popped her head back into the room.

"Hey Swamp Rat, about you 'handling me'. You're not man or mutant enough for that." With those final words Rogue winked at Gambit and caught up with Logan.

Gambit grinned as he thought to himself 'I'll just have to prove her wrong.'
