If only we could stay here
Forever-
If such a thing exists-
For what has passed here
In the night
In the shadows
The cool shadows
Beyond the sun-glare,
Bathed in moon-glare-
Rather, moon-gleam
And starlight
Yet I doubt the stars, even
Which seemed so close
When I looked upon them
But now I see them only
In the reflection pools
Of your eyes
And eternity is failing
Like the walls
That barred the gate
That barred the dead
For even they are drifting
Like atoms of smoke
To search out themselves-
And I envy them,
For I can do no more searching
Still, I must wander-
Among those
I once would have said
That I knew
So I hold on to this moment,
This one moment-
That may not shake the earth,
Or whatever world
We have drifted to-
It does not sing,
Like the moments
Not long passed-
But we forget the pauses
In the shadows
For life would hold no gleam,
If shadows held no sanctuary
So I hold you
And yourself
In the shadows
Wondering-
If forever has passed
Like everything I knew
Forever-
If such a thing exists-
For what has passed here
In the night
In the shadows
The cool shadows
Beyond the sun-glare,
Bathed in moon-glare-
Rather, moon-gleam
And starlight
Yet I doubt the stars, even
Which seemed so close
When I looked upon them
But now I see them only
In the reflection pools
Of your eyes
And eternity is failing

That barred the dead

Like atoms of smoke

And I envy them,
For I can do no more searching
Still, I must wander-
