Pai had always imagined humans as cruel, spoiled, selfish, allconsuming creatures that destroyed all they touched with their filthy hands.

He had always prepared himself for a world of liars.

Stealers.

Murderers.

He was prepared for them. He would enjoy taking them down. He hadn't prepared himself at all for sentient, feeling creatures and he kept his delusions for quite some time, ignoring the obvious because he preferred that to having to kill people.

He was, after all, still rather young. While older than his brothers—his brothers that should not even be involved in this war—he was young. Young, ablebodied, powerful. Trained.

He had to win this. He had to save everyone.

But then, she shattered his illusion.

He had never suspected that the green-haired girl would amount to anything in his battles. He kept her—even the yellow child—in his mind as some vile creature. A human. Filth. Unfeeling and cruel and selfserving.

But, of course, she had to turn light eyes at him and beg for the fighting to stop. Beg to save that one human boy. Beg to protect.

"Don't you have something to protect?"

She had known they were the same. Seen it before. She had tried to create peace. And, because of this, he became curious. He, foolishly enough, wanted to prove she wasn't human. That she was some other beautiful creature cursed to blend in with the disgusting race he fought.

So he watched her.

He watched her as she smiled at those that tried to hurt her, softly and with a quiet strength. He watched her stumble and trip and drop things and bruise over and over again. He watched her help as well as she could, sweetly and nervously talk to the blond boy, happily joined the other mews—

And, not once, was there any sign she wasn't human. Because, while some of the humans he saw were cruel, he also saw that the mews were all rather kind. He saw many others humans—boys and girls—who were kind like the green-haired mew.

But still, she was the one to expose him to the side of human's he had tried to ignore.

And it was her, in the end, he chose to die for.

He comes back, remember? xDD And Pai got to see the stronger Lettuce. The one that appears later in the series. Remember? :3
