Chapter 1: The Lullaby
"Nessie!"
I felt a slap on the back that almost made me drop my groceries. "Hey, Jake," I smiled at my werewolf friend.
"You need help with those?"
"Yeah, thanks," I handed him the heavy bags to him which he carried effortlessly.
"So what've you been up to?" he asked.
"Just getting ready for my senior year to end."
"So eager to graduate…" he huffed.
"What, is college no fun?" I chuckled.
"Not for me, at least. Not when you're not there." It was silent. "I can feel you're nervous," he grinned.
I blushed, and muttered, "I am not! Besides, I have a boyfriend!" It fell silent again. "I'm sorry," I said softly.
"It's alright," he sighed. He dropped the groceries in my trunk.
"Thanks," I said as I turned on the engine of my Volvo.
"No problem," he replied, and began to walk to his own car.
…
I pulled into the driveway and saw my boyfriend Leo waiting for me.
"Hey, babe," he said as I stepped out of my car. He came up to me and kissed my lips, then my cheek, then my neck.
"Whoa," I said playfully, "You're here for my guitar lesson, remember?"
"Right," he murmured, kissing me again.
I went up to the door, and unlocked it. We were greeted rather coldly by my parents, Edward and Bella. Edward glared at Leo, who stepped a few inches away from me.
"He's here for my guitar lesson, okay?" I pushed past them, dragging Leo with me.
We stepped into my room. Full-sized bed with light blue sheets, light blue walls, pale yellow curtains; a simple bedroom, just the way I like it.
"Alright, show me what you've got."
I nodded, picked up my purple acoustic guitar, and began to strum random chords as I hummed softly. I finished, and all Leo said was, "Nice."
I stared at him, shocked. "Nice? You're supposed to say, 'Oh, my beautiful Renesmee, that was simply marvelous!'" I giggled and pecked him on the lips.
"Alright, let me teach you a song I wrote," Leo took the guitar and began to play.
…
"Bye Leo! Thanks for the lesson!" I waved as he got into his truck.
"No problem, babe," he called, and drove off.
I walked back to my room, and plopped onto my bed. I looked out of the open window for a few moments. "Jake, I know you're out there."
He hopped onto the windowsill. "Damn, you're good."
I giggled. "Half-vampire, remember?"
"Yeah, does Leo know that you're…"
"No." I looked down at the floor. How am I going to tell Leo?
"Alright, you need to get to bed," Jake pulled down the sheets of my bed, and gestured to me to lay down. "I want to play something for you."
"You play? I never knew that; why haven't you told me?"
He shrugged. "It never occurred to me." He turned off the lights, picked up my guitar, and sat on the windowsill. Then came the loveliest sound.
It was soft, like a lullaby. Jacob's fingers strummed the instrument with such grace and gentleness, as if it were so precious to him. His bare chest glowed from the soft rays of moonlight flooding the room. He looked so peaceful, too, unlike his usual I'm-so-tough look.
I closed my eyes. The tune is beautiful…
I then heard a whisper in my ear, saying, "I'll play this for you every night, my beautiful Renesmee."
My eyes snapped open, but saw nothing. Jacob was gone. I was about to get up to look out the window, but I was too tired, and so I slipped into unconsciousness…
