*THERE ARE INEVITABLY GOING TO BE SPOILERS OF THE NEW FILM IN THIS STORY LATER ON, SPOILERS THAT HAVE BEEN CONFIRMED AS LEGITIMATE, SO IF YOU'RE ONE TO AVOID THEM, DO NOT READ!*
Hey everyone. I can't tell you how excited I am to finally be back. I've been waiting for basically a year now to do this. I will say that if you haven't read Addiction equals reality 1 and 2, you'd be better off doing so, but it's a choice, so do as you please. Also, one notable character within HTTYD is absent from this story due to the events in the previous Addiction equal reality stories. These stories pretty much follow the canon of HTTYD, but they have their own continuity. Sorry if that disappoints you once you find out which character it is. Without further ado, welcome to Addiction equals reality 3.
This chapter is a flashback to the ending of Addiction equals reality 2, showing a part of the ending you never saw in that story; Toothless's reaction to this lad seemingly vanishing and abandoning him.
CHAPTER 1: A vanished lad
Toothless flew with precision above Berk, with his target being the cove, or the forest near the cove. Why? because he left his lover of a human, Morgan, or 'Morgan the Marvellous' as Valka once called him as a viking title, at the forest because the 17 year old wanted to do it as a dare. Why would that be a dare? because Morgan's made everyone, from Hiccup to Astrid to Valka and pretty much the majority of the vikings, think that he's left Berk, so it's a dare in the sense that he could be caught. But Toothless kept him concealed from the vikings, as did the other dragons. It can't really be explained as to why, but look back on what they've done together, Toothless and Morgan that is, over the passing few months and you'll soon find out why. To Toothless, it was a personal issue, an issue that not even his best friend, Hiccup, could know.
The Night Fury saw the emerging green of Berk's thick forest as he continued to spiral through the air as the wind clashed itself against his shiny, black, soft scales; his leather-texture wings were practically moving in the wind like a sail on a ship, he was going that fast. But finally, the Night Fury reached his destination, and thus, he moved his black large wings well over to 'glide' in the air.
As Toothless glided in the air with his four paws hanging out, the Night Fury found the perfect landing spot; an opening in the forest. The dragon made a precise landing, using his Night Fury acquired skills of course, to do so. As soon as his forelegs and back paws hit the grassy surface of the forest, the Night Fury shook his entire body, emitting a jingling noise from the saddle pack and the tail that Hiccup had made for him. After shaking, the dragon emitted a soft sneeze that almost had a purr in it.
His emerald eyes instantly turned to the sunken part of the cove that he assumed Morgan, his so-called lover, would be in. To the Night Fury's surprise, nobody was there. Toothless was smart, though; he knew what Morgan was like. He knew that the 17 year old had a tendency to play tricks, so Toothless concluded that his lover was simply hiding out behind the boulders amongst the cove. The Night Fury let off a loud groan as he once again shook himself, only his head this time, in which his emerald shiny eyes turned to the sunken cove.
The dragon leapt off the upper forest to glide slowly and carefully down into the cove with his wings out wide, avoiding the lake. He landed with precision once again, as his puppy emerald eyes glared at the waterfall dropping its rather shiny-like water into the lake. That's not what the intelligent dragon was here for, though. He was here to find Morgan.
He let off a curiosity whine as he turned his emerald eyes and black scaly head to every direction of the cove. There was still no presence. The dragon started leaping on his four paws over towards the boulders, where he looked inside the gaps by climbing up onto some of the boulders; Morgan wasn't there. The dragon remained on top of the boulder, just looking over the cove. Using his common-sense, Toothless knew that Morgan wasn't here, but if not here, where could he have gone? he was literally dropped off here earlier on today by the dragon himself.
The Night Fury raised his right foreleg up to scratch the top of his black scaly head with his claws, in the midst of having concerns about the whereabouts of Morgan. He couldn't have just disappeared, surely? the dragon let off a longer and deeper whine that sounded like concern. He had a human-like expression where his foam textured black lips were shaking, the type of shaking you'd expect when you're on the verge of a breakdown/cry. Toothless kept it in, though.
He knew Morgan was here somewhere; when the dragon finds him, he's going to forcefully carry Morgan by his shoulders via his black forelegs whilst the dragon himself is flying high; he knew Morgan hated altitudes, so when Toothless finds him, he's going to punish his lover by forcefully bringing him at a high altitude. That might sound over the top, but Toothless wants to do it because Morgan's made the dragon move on the verge of a breakdown. It was a good prank for sure on Morgan's part, and Toothless knew that, but still, the Night Fury was going to pay back the favour.
In case you've forgotten, Morgan's the 17 year old lad who got lucky enough to wake up in this very world from 'our world' one night. He woke up in the cove, and ever since, he has been, (or more appropriately, 'was') living in his favourite 'fictional' universe of How To Train Your Dragon. Meeting the dragons, vikings, everything a HTTYD fan could ask for. But for Morgan, his time in this world has (again, it's probably more appropriate to say 'had') led to some rather unexpected occurrences; at first, it was the whole Tuffnut debacle. After that, Hiccup called a viking election to ease off the fears of not being trusted by the vikings of Berk.
Then, something emerged between the 17 year old lad and Toothless, after Toothless himself acknowledged that Morgan was unique from all the other humans the dragon has seen before; Morgan just had that vibe of being from a different type of dimension, and it had shown in his look, build, and accent for the Night Fury. His accent was so different that his pronunciations had actually made the Night Fury emit a laugh at one point, and the comical accent was just one of many things that made Toothless see Morgan in a whole different shade of light from the rest.
And on Morgan's behalf, he took what the Night Fury was hinting at with open arms; it was a hidden feeling of his, after all, that he tried to avoid at first, until he couldn't hide it when he realized Toothless was giving the hint.
But all of that might've been put to rest for good, given that Toothless hasn't found Morgan at all within this vicinity of the cove. The Night Fury was worried, but he wasn't giving up hope at all. He didn't just want Morgan, he NEEDED him.
Toothless flew up from the boulder to the top forest surrounding the cove, flapping his wings to emit huge collections of wind. As he flew up, the Night Fury's wings caused some of the leaves on the trees to fly off. That was how powerful the intelligent dragon was. After ascending up and getting a bird's eye view of the cove by standing within the forest, Toothless started letting off brief purrs and rumbles that sounded soft with a mixture of concern. He looked down at the ground where his two fore legs were standing; his eyes felt all shiny, and the dragon's lips were once again shaking. Funny, isn't it? Toothless, on the verge of crying over a human in Morgan? even though he's got Hiccup as his best pal? honestly, when you find out why Toothless is treating Morgan as his secret second human, it'll make sense. Still, the Night Fury felt weakened amongst his black shiny scale self.
But as he looked down at the rock and mossy surface he was standing on that was the edge of the forest leading into the sunken cove, he could hear flapping from above. Toothless turned around, his wings briefly sliding across the boulder-surface and all, as huge collections of wind were being thrown into the trees around this vicinity. A brief rumble had been exchanged as it was Stormfly. She didn't come alone, either. On her back was none other than Hiccup and Astrid. For the past few months, Hiccup's noticed Toothless's tendency to come back here, and so, he wanted to find out why.
"Ohh, there you are bud!" Hiccup said, just climbing off of Stormfly as Astrid followed, after the Deadly Nadder made a landing.
"Good girl!" Astrid said, petting Stormfly as the Deadly Nadder lowered her vicious, light-blue and white shaded head towards Astrid to nuzzle her with the biggest purr going.
Hiccup, meanwhile, wanted to get to the bottom of Toothless always evacuating here as the Night Fury's been doing for the past few months. Hiccup never took full notice of it until it started becoming a constant occurrence. He could tell by his dragon's body language right now, where Toothless's head was lowered and his wings were dangling like loose ropes off of his black scaly sides, that something was upsetting him. Not one to let his dragon be upset, Hiccup walked over to Toothless and grabbed the Night Fury slowly and gently by the maw to raise his head up.
"Toothless bud, what're you doing here? you look...upset...and...devastated? what's wrong?" Hiccup asked, just holding onto his dragon by the maw with concern.
Toothless's emerald eyes were shiny, and Hiccup could make out what looked like tiny tiny portions of tear-like liquids; has...Toothless been subtly crying? what reason would he have to cry? The Night Fury slowly raised his black scaly chin from the grasp of his viking to slowly turn around to the direction of the sunken cove, with small subtle purrs combined with saddened rumbles emerging from the throat of the dragon.
Hiccup and Astrid both walked towards the edge of the cove, as the scent of seaweed and grass from the forest and the cove's lake bombarded their noses, looking out in confusion; Toothless was looking clearly towards that direction, but Hiccup, nor Astrid, could see anything that'd possibly be of concern.
"Bud, what's going on here? you look terribly upset...did you...I dare say this, haha, did you see another Night Fury?" Hiccup asked.
"Very ambitious there aren't you, Hiccup?" Astrid chuckled.
"There's nothing funny about that, Astrid? what if it is? I can't think of any other reason why Toothless would be sad..." Hiccup said, walking back towards the Night Fury.
Toothless sat up a bit, briefly standing on his back paws, before sitting on his tail like he did when he and Hiccup first met, in which Toothless was wanting him to eat up the barfed-up fish at the time. The dragon sat there, human-like, taking his left foreleg to rub his emerald eyes to clear them of the tear appearance his viking just claimed them to be. That's a very human-like gesture, but this is Toothless, he's a Night Fury, the most intelligent dragon, and at this point, it was perfectly normal for Astrid and Hiccup to see the Night Fury behave like a human.
He couldn't help but feel saddened; his human lover in Morgan was seemingly gone, out of nowhere, but that didn't stop Toothless attempting one last check. In the midst of sitting human-style on his long black tail, the dragon heaved his head up and let off a huge roar, one that sounded like a signal. It sounded like a call, but it caught Astrid and Hiccup by surprise, to the point that they briefly held their hands against their ears. Toothless's thick rumble of a roar was the last evidence check for the Night Fury; if Morgan's truly gone, he won't hear him yell back or see him at all running back to the position of the Night Fury. He didn't even care if Morgan's presence would be exposed to Hiccup and Astrid; as long as he's here, then that's all that mattered to the Night Fury.
"Bud, are you...are you angry or what? what was that all about?!" Hiccup said, genuinely caught off guard by the roar.
"I think your dragon's having a rage moment, Hiccup..."
"No, he isn't...something's got into his mind, but I can't quite work out what...uhhh..." Hiccup said, just placing his hands over his face to try and come up with a possible answer.
Out of nowhere, Toothless collapsed from his sitting stance to his four legs, where he suddenly nuzzled his scaly head against Hiccup's chest; this surprised Hiccup. What on earth was Toothless doing?
"Oh uh, Toothless, are you okay?" Hiccup said, just rubbing his dragon's scaly head as the Night Fury purred and nuzzled his entire face into his viking's chest.
The Night Fury simply looked up at Hiccup, straight in the face, before slowly swaying his scaly head left and right, signalling a 'no', once again using a human-like gesture. Hiccup was shocked; Toothless IS upset, but finding out why is something he can't do. As the Night Fury ascended back up from his viking, Stormfly hopped on by the dragon's side, where the two reptiles embraced each other, cheek-to-cheek, as they exchanged purrs. Being the play buddies they've been for the past years, Toothless felt completely comfortable with Stormfly.
But the fact of the matter was, it's been well over a minute since Toothless did that roar, and there was not a single response in the distance, nor was there a yell amongst the forest, which has led to the confirmation; Morgan has completely, seemingly, vanished. The Night Fury, upon going back to the other dragons later on, such as Cloudjumper, Skullcrusher and the rest, could simply wait for Skullcrusher the Rumblehorn, Eret's dragon, to pick up a scent unintentionally that'll maybe lead to Morgan, but it was hopeless.
To Astrid and Hiccup, Morgan had left three months ago; they're under the impression that the young lad went off on that boat on the night of the election results three months ago, sailing back to Britain, when in actual fact, Morgan was taken to the rookery island that night by Cloudjumper to confirm to Toothless what he wanted secretly during his entire time within the How To Train Your Dragon universe. Because of that, Morgan being the reason for Toothless's sadness was completely out of the question to both Hiccup and Astrid.
Toothless needed to be comforted by his viking and Stormfly to get over his 'lover' disappearing and seemingly abandoning him. Why, oh why, would such a unique young lad like that just abandon Toothless? the truth? Morgan didn't even 'abandon' him intentionally.
"I uh, I think we should head on back to the hall and figure this out, what do you say, bud? and Astrid?" Hiccup said, just holding onto Toothless by the side as the Night Fury's ears had lowered whilst staring off into the sunken cove below.
"And hey, uh, my mum's waiting for me as well, I told her I'd show her how I create my inventions, and uh, the tails I make for good old Toothless here too..." Hiccup added, gently patting Toothless on the back of the dragon's neck.
So that was it; Morgan's gone, and Toothless had simply accepted that in an instant upon his viking declaring he, alongside Stormfly and Astrid, go back to the Great Hall at the village. Toothless was willing to accept the reality of Morgan disappearing for good, but reluctantly. There was no point in making it all the more obvious of his sadness, and so, Toothless leapt away from the cove's edge, and he lowered his black scaly self to allow Hiccup to climb onto his strong back.
"See, bud? a bit of activities will make your sadness go away..." Hiccup declared, as he slowly climbed onto Toothless's back in the midst of keeping his balance whilst climbing because of his metal leg.
"And Toothless, on the bright side, you can be on the losing end of OUR RACE BACK TO THE VILLAGE! GO GIRL!" Astrid yelled, with Stormfly instantly running, letting her wings out to glide rapidly upwards into the air, just leaving Hiccup and Toothless in the forest.
"Why is she so competitive, man? come on bud, let's try and get there before her..." Hiccup said, hooking his metal leg into place on Toothless's saddle pack.
As Toothless took to the skies with his leather-like black wings, ascending above Berk's thick forest, he couldn't help but despair at what just happened. Little does the dragon know, though, Morgan's disappearance wasn't intentional; it was actually an accident. All Morgan did was feel the vibe of being back home in 'our world', when suddenly, everything had blackened out for him, and the next minute, he was back in his bed back in 'our world', waking up from his time in the HTTYD universe.
And with Morgan's full departure from the HTTYD world, albeit by accident, Toothless's future afterwards would go on to include meeting a Light Fury, his next and new mate, overcoming Grimmel, the new threat, and perhaps most emotionally, leaving Hiccup in order to stay with the Light Fury in peace in the wild. Not once, however, would Toothless think about Morgan. He hasn't even came up in the Night Fury's mind since the Grimmel threat and getting with the Light Fury. But you can bet your bottom dollar that ever since Morgan returned to 'our world', he's been thinking about Toothless.
