Author's Note: Hi, everyone! This is something I wrote a while ago to fill a request, and it's actually one of my favorite things I've written for this fandom. It features RP-based Mitsuko and m!Kazuo, just to clarify. It's pretty short, but not quite short enough to post as part of GBTSG, so here it is as a stand-alone. I don't own Battle Royale or The Shining!
Anonymous asked: "You should write about Mitsuko and Kazuo going to a scary movie"
"I don't understand why you always want to go see The Shining," Mitsuko grumbled to Kazuo as they found seats in the back of the movie theater. "Doesn't it get old?"
"No… I like it." Kazuo snuck a glance at her as he sat down. "And the dead twins freak you out."
Mitsuko glared. "They do not."
He chuckled. "Sure."
The two sat in silence for a few moments before the lights dimmed. There were no previews — Mitsuko sighed quietly, thinking that they really needed to find a more up-to-date theater, preferably one that played and advertised movies that were actually from this century… this country, as well. Subtitles were such a pain. She sank into her chair, considering just falling asleep for this showing — no doubt she'd be dragged back again before long. Her eyes fluttered shut.
Of course, Kazuo wasn't about to allow her to tap out so easily. "It's starting," he muttered, shaking her shoulder. "Don't you want to watch? Unless you're scared, I mean."
Mitsuko opened one eye and scowled in his general direction. "I'm not scared."
Kazuo grinned as music started to play, his white teeth showing even in the darkness. "If you say so."
Damn it all. Mitsuko sat up straighter and crossed her arms, determined to prove him wrong and forgetting that they had this conversation nearly every time they went to this movie. Her eyes narrowed at the long, winding road on the screen.
Kazuo had been right about one thing, though — she hated those twins and everything about their storyline. They were unnatural, freakish, and one of the few things that truly unnerved her, not that she'd ever admit it.
Their first appearance was well into the film, and Mitsuko found herself tapping her foot in nervous anticipation. She pursed her lips, hearing Kazuo laugh quietly.
"Come and play with us, Danny…" There it was. She gritted her teeth, waiting for the two demons to disappear. "Come and play with us forever…"
"Souma."
Mitsuko glanced down. Oh. She'd unconsciously moved her hand so that it was gripping Kazuo's arm tightly. She let go immediately, but the pale marks remained on his skin.
"Sure, you're not scared," he muttered. Mitsuko chose not to comment.
She kept her eyes trained on the screen but let her mind drift for the remainder of the movie. There was only one moment where she refocused, and it was to watch Kazuo.
"Look at it," he mused, keeping his voice low. "So much blood… it's like a wave… unrealistic, since it wouldn't quite crash out of the elevator that way… it would just sort of seep into the hallway, don't you think?" Kazuo must have felt Mitsuko's gaze, because he turned to look directly at her. "How many people would have to die to get that much blood in one place?"
Goosebumps appeared on Mitsuko's arms, but she managed not to shudder. "You're asking the wrong person."
They got through the rest of the movie in silence, and Mitsuko held back a sigh of relief as the lights flickered back on. She rose to her feet and stretched, noticing as she did so that they were practically the only ones in the theater.
Kazuo rose and eyebrow at her. "Well?"
"I liked it better the forty-ninth time," she said cuttingly. "Next time, I'm picking the movie."
