It all started with Papa's injury. The horror of seeing him come home with his arm in a makeshift and bloodied sling stays with me everyday. But, in a way, it was the aftermath that was the worst. There's was never enough food, and the money that medicine cost for Papa made my brothers Jack and Les leave school. That's what drove me to make my move. The only daughter in the household, yet apparently the only one with the nerve to act on the current events. That's why I ran away. And that's what Davey doesn't understand. That's why I can't be seen by him. And now that he joined the newsies, my job is going to be much more difficult.
