Nora Winsor walked glumly home from her school, alone, on a Friday
afternoon. Her school bag was slung on one shoulder, the other side dangled
beside her waist. She quickly brushed back a curl of chestnut coloured hair
and tucked it behind her ear. Nora was feeling hot inside her jeans, but
her arms were cool and tanned. Her sneakers were old and one shoe lace was
stuck out at a funny angle. Her emerald eyes matched her faint green t-
shirt, which she wore almost every school day.
The day had ended terribly for her again. Adeline, who was once her best friend, (and now her formal enemy) had deliberately stepped on her Algebra homework, making the clean piece of file paper, rumpled and stained with dirt. Now she was only hoping her teacher would excuse her, if not give her a F.
She had missed her school bus when her locker was jammed, (probably Adeline again) with pieces of cardboard. Embarrassed, she had to get the janitor, Mr. Bradbury to take it out before he accidentally pulled the door, clean off its hinges. Her cheeks burned as he apologized over and over again. Quickly, she had grabbed her textbooks and ran out of the school doors- only to see the school bus rolling down the street, into the distance.
Now she was walking, what seemed like forever to get to 13 Green Lane Avenue. Two bikes zipped past her, the riders not giving her a single glance.
Finally she saw her house, a freshly painted white home, with red shingles and a mowed lawn. A stone path went up to the front door and Nora almost ran there with gladness. She took out the keys her parents had given her and opened the door with a 'click'.
She ran upstairs and inside her room, she plopped onto her bed with relief, glancing at her posters. Every inch of her wall was covered in pictures, posters and autographs from her beloved movie trilogy, The Lord of The Rings. Her bed, was a huge picture of the Fellowship, all crowded together, there names sewn into the fabric.
"Lucky me I live in New Zealand," she thought. "I've got as much as I need."
She had been at the New Zealand Return of the King premiere and had got a picture with her favourite actor- Elijah Woods.
She remembered feeling the jealously around her from friends, enemies and even her parents as she stood beside them, grinning. It had been the best day of her life. Her blue and white curtains were sewn with the initials, LOTR and on her dressing table there lay her Evenstar's necklace and an elven brooch. On the back of the door, hung the life size sword, Anduril made out of folded steel.
Nora could do absolutely anything she wanted because her parents were out of town and were only coming back on Wednesday. After eating a snack of Oreos and milk, she settled down to do her homework, writing with a pen that was shaped like the sword, Sting.
Her horse collection of Shadowfax, Fatty Lumpkin, Bill and Snowmane stared at her with empty eyes. She struggled with English and Science for two hours. By then, the sky had grown dark and the house was silent and eerie. The only sound was the scratching of her pen on paper and a frequent sigh.
Finally, Nora glanced at her clock.
Exactly six o clock.
The little rid digits inside were flashing. She put down her pen and pulled back her chair. Time to make dinner. Downstairs in the kitchen, she opened the cupboard and took out a packet of chicken flavoured, instant noodles. Nora over cooked them and ate it soggy in a bowl on her lap.
At the same time, she watched the Two Towers for the 46th time in a row. She was absolutely miserable. Not because she was watching LOTR, but because she hated her life so much and so desperately wanted to be with what she cared about most was of course, Lord of the Rings.
"I'd do anything to have Lord of the Ring's more in my life." Nora whispered aloud, as she watched the Battle of Helms Deep.
A window in the room was opened and the wind swept inside, no longer a gentle breeze. A room in the house slammed shut. She felt frightened to be alone in the house at night. Nora set the bowl on the floor and went to the window, and pulled it closed. Just in time, it had begun to rain, and there was a flash of lightning.
She didn't feel like eating anymore so continued to watch. Just when Aragorn raised his sword to strike down an orc, the power went out. It was a complete pitch black, and Nora shivered a bit.
Suddenly, the doorbell rang. Who could it be? She wondered. Nora's curiosity over took her. Using her knowledge of the house, she carefully treaded her way to the front door and opened it slowly.
On the welcome mat stood the most beautiful woman. Nora could dimly see that she was wearing a blood red dress that dropped all the way to her ankles and was wearing red high heel shoes. Her nails were perfectly manicured and had a coat of red nail polish on. Even her eyes seem red, Nora thought amusingly. Probably someone going to a party.
"I think you've come to the wrong house." Nora told her, holding back a giggle. "I'm not having a party here." The woman looked offended. "I think I'm at the right house, thank you. Are you Nora Winsor?"
Nora gapped at her.
"How'd you know my name?" she demanded.
"I know everyone's name." she shrugged. "You did say you would do anything to have your Lord of the Rings in your life right?"
"How did you know that?"
Another flash of lighting lit up the sky for a second revealing a rather strange look on her face.
"Just a gift of mine." She said casually. "Can I come inside? It's rather chilly outside you know..."
Nora stepped away from the door to let the mysterious woman in, completely ignoring the rule, don't let strangers inside.
"Exactly who are you?" Nora demanded.
"Promise you won't be scared?"
She nodded.
"Well, I'm the Devil."
Nora wasn't even frightened. The little giggle that had been stuck in her throat, burst out into rings of laughter.
"Sure, and I'm God." she said sarcastically.
The woman shook her head sadly.
"That's what they always say in the beginning. Why don't you believe me? You don't think your parents made up the devil to scare you and to make you be good?"
Nora laughed again. "This is a prank isn't it? From Adeline right?"
"Your enemy? Of Course not! Just because I don't look like some scary monster doesn't mean that I'm not the Devil."
She pointed at the floor and flames shot out of the ground surrounding her.
"A trick" Nora repeated taking a step back. "A trick", But this time, she wasn't so certain.
"Then how about this?" The woman transformed herself into a huge monster- Satan. Red horns, the tail and malicious eyes.
"Ok, ok! I believe you!" Nora shouted. "What do you want from me? I haven't done anything bad, have I?"
"Of course you haven't." she said sweetly. "I just want to help you. I've helped loads of people. You see, I just want to help you get what you want."
"In exchange for what?" Nora asked suspiciously.
"Tell you what Nora me dear, I give you ten wishes, whatever you want and in exchange, I want you to get me the actual Ring of Power from the book." ************************************************************************ Hope you liked it.
