I touched up on my hair as Darrel was getting dressed. Darry had a football game tonight and we were going to go watch it. Ponyboy and Soda had gone with Darry to the practice before the game with complete pride in their older brother. Darrel and I had agreed to it as long as Darry watched them while we weren't there.
"You ready to go, Mary-Anne?" Darrel asked walking in while tucking in his shirt. He looked so young.
"Lets go." I said throwing a chuckle. He had a goofy grin that was passed on to Soda, as we got in the car. "Darry's been practicing so hard, I'm so proud of him." I said as excitement filled my blood. Darrel nodded and laughed.
"All three of our boys are chips off the ole block." He said smiling, his eyes glazing with pride. We heard a train in the distance and Darrel put his foot on the breaks when we got to the tracks. We weren't stopping.
"Darrel stop the car!" I screamed as the train approached and we got closer to the tracks
. "I can't!" He yelled pressing down harder. Our car suddenly rolled onto the tracks and stopped as they brought it to a halt. I didn't have time to say anything else before I saw my boys growing up. Darry holding Soda, Pony losing his first tooth, Soda and Pony laughing at each other just by random, Darry playing football, Measuring them on our wall, watching their little chests go up and down as they slept, hugging them close to my body. Then, there was a light were Darrel stood I reluctantly walked in it with him. "My boys..."
Darry's POV:
I looked around on the huge crowd as they cheered loudly for our team. I smiled as Pony, Soda, Steve, Two-bit, and Dally were yelling at the top of their lungs. Johnny was sitting quietly next to them but I could see a smile of excitement. I looked around for mom and dad but they weren't there. I huddle up but before I could play the coach yelled my name and pulled me out, replacing me with Kyle. I could see his eyes filled with sympathy as he stared me in the eyes, next to him was a police officer. "Darrel Curtis?" The officer asked his voice emotionless.
"What's wrong?" I asked catching on the intensity immediately.
"I'm sorry to inform you that Mary-Anne Curtis and Darrel Curtis Sr got into a train accident. They died on impact." Thoughts raced through my head as the world began to spin. All I could see was the confused faces of Pony and Soda in the crowd. "We need to talk about custody of your brothers, but first we need you to identify the bodies for confirmation. I'm sorry son." The police took off his hat and without tears I stood there. Frozen in time. Mom and Dad were dead and it was my fault. They were coming to my game. My fault... It's all my fault...
