He
stood at the edge of the chasm and gazed into its depths. Picturing
the town that was and his life as it had been.
Before he arrived here his life had been normal, quiet … boring. The prelude to the symphony his life had become. Symphony, he smiled wryly. More like the sound track to a horror movie. Vampires, monsters, demons, curses, Slayers … witches, he smiled again, thinking of red hair and green eyes, then frowned, and other werewolves.
He'd gone back to Tibet after his last visit. Gone back to learn more control, thinking he could return to his friends if he could just learn to control the wolf when it came out. He could control the change, mostly, usually, but the beast itself … And there he'd stayed until he heard about the 'seismic phenomenon,' the 'big one' in California.
"I should have been here," he murmured quietly. Not just because of HER, that was long over, but because of them, the Scooby's, his friends. He had heard the stories, the scientific explanations and theories. He believed none of them. They were too rational. Rational things didn't happen in Sunnydale.
"What really happened, Wil?" he whispered. "Did any of you survive?" That was the worst part, not knowing, not being able to find out.
A car horn blew behind him. "Yo, Oz, there's nothing left here to see. Let's go, man." Devon waved at him impatiently.
Sadly, Oz stepped back up on the road that dropped off into the pit. Strange, after all these months, he could still smell car exhaust on the road. Exhaust, gasoline, people … He paused, a surprised look on his face. He took a deep breath, breathing in the scent. The scent of people he … recognized. Maybe … He wondered closer to the edge, following the scents … Giles … Faith?? … Buffy … Willow … Xander. Alive but he could also smell blood. And mixed with many he didn't recognize but that all gathered together in one vehicle.
The car horn blew again. "Oz, let's get out of here. This place gives me the creeps. What if there's an aftershock?"
Aftershock? Oh, right, 'quake. He smiled. "Coming, Dev." He breathed in the familiar scents once more and trotted back to the car. "Say, I'm getting a little hungry. Why don't we stop at the next town and have lunch?" He remembered a hospital near the main road there. Might be a place for answers.
