I decided it was about time I wrote something dedicated to Inuyasha and Kikyo. After all, before Kagome there was always Kikyo, faithful and true, even though she is currently an undead, and sometimes a real pain in the butt to boot. But, since I'm feeling nice to her, this songfic won't include any Kikyo-bashing.

Anyway, my mom really likes playing this song on the piano, and my dad and I love to sing along. It makes me think of Inu and Kikyo, so I decided it'd be perfect for a songfic. Well, here it is. Enjoy! (And yes, it's Inu/Kikyo, of course)

Disclaimer: I don't own InuYasha or any related characters, nor do I own this song, so if you sue me, your own lawyer's gonna kick your butt. Then my lawyer (and my butt) will kick your butt. So don't even think about suing me. I said I didn't own it. I have it in writing. Ha. So there. XD

The Way We Were

Memories light the corners of my mind. / Misty water-colored memories of the way we were.

Inuyasha couldn't sleep. Again, his mind was haunted by memories of Kikyo. Her gentle smile, the rare laugh, even her fierce protectiveness. She had been the most beautiful woman alive to him, so long ago.

Scattered pictures of the smiles we left behind/ Smiles we gave to one another for the way we were.

"How could our love have shattered so easily?" he wondered. "Why did she have to die?"

Can it be that it was all so simple then / Or has time rewritten every line?

He rolled over, looking at Kagome sleeping innocently beside him. She was beautiful, and she had also captured his heart, but Kikyo…Kikyo was something else entirely. She was the first woman he had loved. What would have happened if our love had been stronger? he wondered.

If we had the chance to do it all again, tell me would we? Could we?

At last, he left the fire. He needed time to think. Something rustled nearby. He smelled grave soil, and a more familiar scent.

Memories are so beautiful, and yet what's too painful to remember / We simply choose to forget.

"Kikyo?" The rest of his words were lost as she kissed him. Her lips were so cold…but he couldn't help returning the kiss.

So it's the laughter we will remember / Whenever we remember the way we were…

"Inuyasha," she murmured.

"Shh," he replied, kissing her again. Just this once. He forgot about Kagome in that moment. Kikyo loved him. And that was enough.

The way we were…

Ooh, ambiguous ending… I'm evil. But it's so hard to write Inu/Kikyo for me without killing him, and I didn't want him to die. Come read my other stuff!
