Jess stared at the clock's 9:45 p.m., then headed for the kitchen. She hauled out eggs, flour, sugar, and Nestle's bag and began cookie-making. Chocolate chip was Sam's favorite. She thought she knew Sam inside-and-out, understood everything about him.
Jessica dumped the ingredients into a bowl, hand-beating the mixture with fervor. Sam had carried on an eye-conversation with Dean right under her nose, and Jess suddenly realized that Dean knew Sam far better than she ever could. That Sam's sparing talk about his family hid not estrangement but pain and loss. They were so talking about this when Sam returned.
