Yeah, so this happened and I'm blaming it all on Phyllis Logan. All of it. S6 spoilers sort of...not really.
Coming into their bedroom, Elsie found her husband sitting on the bed staring at the plainly wrapped package on his lap.
"Charlie?" she asked as she sat beside him. "What is it?"
"I don't know."
"Well, where did it come from?"
"I don't know."
Elsie huffed. "Charles Carson, can't you say anything else?"
Charles turned to her with a frown. "Not when there's nothing else to say."
Elsie rolled her eyes and pointed at the package. "Well, are you going to open it?"
Shrugging, Charles untied the ribbon then slowly pulled back one edge of the paper. His eyes bulged nearly out of their sockets, his face and ears heating to a bright red as he coughed and hurriedly tried to cover the gift back up and shuffle it away from his wife's grasp.
"Charlie? Whatever in the world has gotten into you?" Elsie growled as she reached across and grabbed the package from him, her slender hands far quicker than Charles thought possible.
"Elsie, don't," he started, but it was too late.
Elsie felt her face flush as she swallowed hard, the book heavy in her hands, the title staring up at her.
Kama Sutra
"Ch," she started then cleared her throat and tried again. "Char," but her voice squeaked as she looked up at her husband with wide eyes. "Whooo?" she finally managed, thinking to herself that she sounded like a bloody owl. Whooo indeed.
Charles shook his head, his eyes as wide as his wife's. "No card."
Elsie frowned as she looked back at the book. She would almost suspect Mrs. Patmore, but even she wouldn't be that cheeky. Biting her bottom lip, Elsie looked back up at her husband. "Have you ever…?" she let her question hang.
"Read it?" Charles asked, wondering if that was what she'd intended to ask.
"Yes. Read it," she answered with a tremble in her voice.
"I have," he answered in a low rumble.
Biting her lip again, Elsie looked back down at the book, her finger nervously tracing the embossed title. "And," she started then bit her lip again. "And have you ever…"
"No, Love." Charles answered as he reached out, lifting her face with the tip of his finger under her chin. "I will with you, if you would like."
"May I read it first?"
"You may do with it what you wish, Love."
Elsie smiled at him then leaned in and pressed her lips to his. "Maybe once I've grown accustomed to being a wife," she whispered into the kiss.
"As you wish."
