Transitions

By: Song

Summery: It is said that death is peaceful. Iruka wonders if this is actually true.

Warnings: Character death

A/U: Went back into some old files to see what I had... remember to review!

"Life is pleasant. Death is peaceful. It's the transition that's troublesome." - Isac Asimov

They had come to his house clad in bloodied ANBU uniforms, cold and emotionless masks staring lifelessly, boring into the very soul. Their leader held out a cracked faceplate of the hound.

Iruka knew what had happened. He had been expecting it since he had been with Kakshi, since their first night, since he had come home distraught as the first of his students were killed in the line of duty, since Kakashi decided to rejoin ANBU. He knew since the night so many years ago now when he recognized what shinobi were. .. he knew that someday, he would loose everything.

Iruka seemed to drown in the sorrow. Gently accepting the offering, he motioned the ANBU away.

The chakra outside the door faded and he collapsed to the floor. Through the eyes of a ninja death is part daily life. But through the eyes of a lover it was the world collapsing around you, leaving you standing, alone in the dark.

What was this now, the fifth (sixth, tenth, fifteenth, fiftyith) precious person he had lost?

And now Iruka stood, like many shinobi (and his lover) before him at the memorial stone.

They said that "Life is pleasant. Death is peaceful. It's the transition that's troublesome."

Thats all life was, really. Transitions.
