A raven-haired girl was at a bar. She was at a seat on the left-hand corner by herself. Her shoes were off, and she was drinking a cocktail.
A man came in. Seeing him, the bartender went over to the girl and discretely nodded.
The man also noticed her; she was the only alone-girl there. He walked over to her.
"Mind if I join you?"
"Be my gest," she said, not to soberly.
Hi sat next to her. "Can I buy you a drink?"
"That would be nies. A whiskey sour, pleaz."
"Two whiskey sours," he said to the bartender. "My name's Jim," he said to her.
"Hi, Jim. My namez Helen."
"Pleased to meet you."
They shook hands. Then he noticed her feet. "Uncomfortable shoes?"
"I like to take 'em off-'speshally when I'm drinkin'! Do you disapprove?"
"Not at all. You look kinda cute, barefooted."
She smiled. "Tha's the nisest thing anyone's said to me all evenin'!"
"Looks like you've been here for a while."
"I'm celebratin'. My divorce came through, today!"
"Well, congratulations!"
"Thanx!"
The drinks came. She drowned her old drink and picked up the new one. "Cheerz!"
"To your new freedom."
"I'll drink to that!"
They saluted and drank.
They drank two rounds together.
"I've got an idea, Helen: What do you say I take you back to your place, for a nightcap?"
She looked at him suspiciously. "Iz this a pickup?"
"Only of you want it to be."
She thought for a bit. "Sure. After all, this iz my emansipasionsionsion!" She giggled, and he also laughed. "Let me put my shooz back on, first." She tried to put her feet into them. "I can't quite do it!"
"Here, let me help you."
He picked the shoes up and put them on her feet.
"Now, you're ready for the ball, Cinderella."
"Thanx, Prince Charmin'!"
They got up and left the bar."
"My apartment iz right down the street. . . Oh, I don't feel so good!"
"Here, there's an alleyway."
He led her there.
Suddenly, she "sobered up." She hit him on a spot on his head, causing him to pass out!
She checked to make sure he was really out, then she quickly went through his clothes. In his coat, she found an envelope. She looked at it quickly, and put it in her pocketbook. Then she ran away.
She got to her apartment. "There, she made a phone call.
"Hello."
"Hi, Chief."
"99! I was starting to worry about you."
"I'm all right. And I got the document!"
"Good girl! Now, I'm still in the office. Bring it here as quickly as you can."
"Right, Chief."
"Good luck, 99."
"Thanks. Bye, Chief."
