Disclaimer: All I own is the plot

Mrs. Lancaster sat outside in the waiting room. Hazel had a healthy checkup today. She knew the deal. Hazel wasn't due for a shot this year so she didn't have to come in. Hazel always felt better doing it alone. It made her feel like a grown-up.

The doctor came out of the office.

"Mrs. Landcaster," she said, "Let's talk in my office."

A wave of fear went through Mrs. Landcaster.

"Okay," she said.

Dr. Maria led her into a comfortable office with comfortable chairs but to Mrs. Landcaster it felt like a prison. Something was wrong. Dr. Maria never called her "Mrs. Landcaster". They were like sisters. She always called her Frannie. Also she sounded way too professional. Something was definitely wrong.

"I felt a lump in Hazel's neck," the doctor said, "It's hard and unmovable and she screamed when I touched it. It indicates thyroid cancer."

"NO," Mrs. Landcaster yelled, "But you just said it indicates cancer. It could be anything right?"

"No it couldn't," Dr. Maria said, "And I love you Frannie but I have to be blunt. I need to run a biopsy on her right away."

"I'm calling Michael," Mrs. Landcaster said.

...

"Mike," his boss said, "Your wife is on the phone. She says it's very important."

"I'll get it," he said picking up the phone.

"Hi honey" he said.

He could hear Frannie was hysterical. The only words she could say clearly is "Hazel" and "Thyroid cancer"

"I'll be right over," he said, "Where are you now"

"Children's," she said, "They're offering us a choice of chemo and some new less painful kind of treatment. Are they *********** kidding," she exploded.

"Just sit tight," he said, "I'll be right over"
