It was April 2000 and Harry, Ron, and Hermione were settled down. Harry and Ginny had invited Ron and Hermione to dinner, and were just about done with their meal when a knock was heard at the door. Harry opened it to find a house elf standing there with a little squirming brown bundle in her arms.
"Winky is not meaning to intrude, Harry Potter, but Winky came to show Harry Potter and his friends Winky's child," the house elf squeaked, gesturing to her bundle. From behind Harry Hermione squealed softly, clapping her hands.
"Come in, Winky, and sit down," Ginny said, leading Winky to the sitting room. She obliged and the others followed soon after.
"Who's the father?" Harry asked, once everyone has sat down and were taking little sips of tea.
"Yes, Winky thought Harry Potter would like to know this. Dobby is Winky's baby's father." Everyone gasped, unable to believe their ears. "Winky knows Harry Potter was very fond of Dobby, so Winky came to tell him that."
"How is this possible?" Hermione asked, confused. The others nodded in agreement. Winky sighed.
"House elves carry children in them much longer than humans. Winky had her baby in her for two years. Winky is very happy because she calls her baby Dobby, just like his father, and Winky knows Dobby would be happy because little Dobby was born a free elf, and-" Winky had tears in her eyes, and soon Harry's and Ron's eyes were glistening and the girls had tears streaming down their faces. "-and little Dobby will never have a master, not now, not ever. He's a free elf, just like Dobby."
They talked for another hour or so before Winky said that she had to go back to Hogwarts. Hermione insisted that Winky come work for her and Ron, and she would get paid and Dobby junior wouldn't have to work for them when he got old enough. Winky accepted.
Winky has been happy working for the Weasleys every since, and Dobby junior became the world's first elven advocate against house elf cruelty. And, up in heaven, Dobby senior was smiling down at them.
