It amazed him. It really did. How she was always three steps behind him but five steps in front. She always kept her distance, it was ,after all, a purely platonic Colonel and Lieutenant relationship. She would always be his subordinate, he would always be her boss. Even if there was that one tiny hope when he had noticed that he could no longer serve the military. But the Doctor fixed that.

Star crossed lovers. That's what they are, were. They were not lovers now. Not since those many years back when she was just a teen. They hadn't really been lovers then though. They hadn't even been friends, more of acquaintances.

He was her fathers student. She was always at school when he was learning. When she came home she would go to her wing. He would still be learning. It was a big house, though run down, the barley met. When he left not much changed. She would still go to school, still return and go to her . They had not been some cliché couple that feel in love while teens. They had not gone against her fathers wishes.

Though he felt guilty sometimes. When he wanted her to get injured. Not seriously injured, just enough so that she was discharged. Just enough so it wasn't illegal. He hated himself for that. He hated himself when her neck had been cut. He hated himself so much. He wasn't worried. He wasn't worried at all. He knew she would survive. she was strong enough to survive. It was luck. He hadn't been scared at all.

He had only been scared about her once. And she hadn't been in any danger. When her father had died, at his funeral, he had told her his dream. She had liked it. He saw the look in her eye, she was going to do something. He was truly afraid then. And his fears became true, she joined the military. She, one of the reasons he wanted to join, to protect people like her, joined the Ishval, she asked him to hurt her.

He complied, grudgingly. Perhaps they would put her out of commission. Perhaps she wouldn't return after that. But that didn't happen, instead she dedicated herself to him. Always staying three steps behind him. But in reality, he was five steps behind her. He was a Colonel because of her, it was her back that allowed him to become a state alchemist. And with becoming a state alchemist all of it's privileges, have the rank of a major was one of them. He was rubbish with knives and swords. He was lazy and a procrastinator. He'd probably be a lieutenant if it weren't for his alchemy. Yet her, she got there on her own. She was still ahead of him. But for some odd reason she insisted to stay behind.
