"Paradoxes. No A.I. can resist thinking about them. (…) As long as I don't listen to what I'm saying, I should be okay. Probably..."
-GlaDOS from Portal 2
. . .
Mina looked at Zane with burning curiosity. Her mouth twitched in decision of whether to ask him or not. What if she fried his circuits and he went haywire? The Nindroid, being far more observant than what the girl gave credit for, turned to face her.
"Would you like to ask me something?" Zane asked her, being rather blunt.
"Do you have a favorite paradox?" Mina asked him quickly, as if she was admitting she had a crush on him.
For a moment, Zane blinked at her. Feeling herself blush in embarrassment, she went on to babble;
"I just, like, want to know if you're more of a 'this sentence is false' kind of Droid. Or, or more 'does a set that contains all sets contain itself' thinker?"
Zane now looked at her curiously.
"What made you think of this?" he asked, sounding just as curious as he looked, perhaps even a bit bewildered.
"I was... playing this game with robots in it..." Mina slowly admitted, Zane gave a small nod. She took this as a sign to continue explaining, "And then there's this one robot that's the villain and another robot who is connected to the player gets the idea of using a paradox to fry enough circuits to shut down the villain's mainframe."
"Does it work?" Zane asked, still maintaining his curiosity. At this point, Mina was glad he wasn't getting mad at her for playing a game where robots destroyed each other.
"Not really." she admitted. "The villain didn't think logically to begin with, so the idea of a paradox flew completely over his head."
Zane smiled a little and gave off a tiny chuckle. At this point, Mina decided to relax, understanding that Zane likely wasn't going to get mad at her by this point.
"And this made you wonder if I would be effected by the introduction of paradoxes?" Zane asked her, sounding and looking rather amused. Mina cringed, saying it out loud made it seem... well... mean.
"Yeah..." Mina agreed, refusing to look the Nindroid in the eye. Mina watched as Zane appeared to fully laugh at the idea... or her. She was too terrified (but equally relieved) that he wasn't seriously upset with her.
"Are you?" she asked.
"Not so much as a normal robotic achievement would." Zane told her. "But I have experienced a little 'down time' due to experiencing a paradox."
"When was that?" Mina asked, raising an eyebrow.
"Before you were conceived, I was a child by way of a villain's time turning."
"But how were you a kid? You were built to look around in your early adult, late teen years. If anything, you would have been a prototype without the synthetic skin or whatever."
"Exactly." Zane agreed. Mina looked at him.
"So, in short," Zane continued, "Yes, I am effected by the idea of paradoxes, but only when those paradoxes effect me. Does that answer your question?"
"Yes, thank you." Mina told him, although she was even more confused now that what she had been.
