The rain came down softly in the middle of the night, beating lightly on the Konoha High School. Each student was sound asleep in his or her own bed. The rain soon started to come down harder and the wind picked up, warning of an incoming storm.
Fifteen year old Shikamaru Nara stirred in his bed and rolled over, trying to get more comfortable. His eyes slowly opened and he looked at the digital clock on the nightstand next to his bed.
12:25 AM
Shikamaru yawned and sat up, rubbing his eyes. He saw the drizzling water on the window that was half blocked by blinds. Shikamaru heard the rumbling thunder in the distance and shivered, he hated thunderstorms. He loved the rain, just not the lightning and thunder.
In the dorm next to Shikamaru, a seventeen year old Kisame was sitting at his desk writing papers and studying. He knew how late it was, but he didn't worry. There was no school that day because it was the weekend.
Kisame's pencil hovered in the air a little bit above a math paper. He thought deeply, he wasn't very good with algebra. He heard a rumble of thunder and looked up out the window, "Storm's coming..." he murmured.
Shikamaru sat up in his bed, resting his chin on his knee. He couldn't fall back asleep now, not with a thunderstorm coming.
"I just have to relax..." he whispered to himself, "It's not like I'm going to-."
A loud crack of thunder made the Nara boy jump. He clutched his chest, trying to calm his racing heart. "Damn, that scared me..." he gasped.
Another boom was heard, this one made the building vibrate. Shikamaru was now scared. He stood up and left his dorm room. He decided to go and see the one person that always made him feel safe... Kisame.
He knocked on the shark boy's door and waited until Kisame came to answer.
When the older boy saw who it was he invited Shikamaru in, "Hey, Shika. What is it?"
Shikamaru blushed and rubbed the back of his neck. Could he really confess his childish fear of storms? "Uhh... Hey, Kisame. I just-"
BOOM!!
"EEP!" Shikamaru jumped and wrapped his arms around Kisame's waist.
Kisame smiled warmly and realized that Shikamaru was scared. He put one arm around the boy's shoulders and stroked his black hair with his other hand. "There's nothing to be afraid of..." he said calmly, "The storm can't hurt you..."
"That's what you think..." Shikamaru mumbled. He started to feel tears rolling down his cheeks.
Kisame saw this and felt worried, "What is it, Shika-luff? Why are you crying?"
"I'm REALLY scared!" Shikamaru sobbed, "I-I don't know why! I just am!"
Kisame led Shikamaru over to the bed and he sat down. He gently pulled Shikamaru onto his lap and held him close, "The storm will pass. It never stays... Besides, love... I'm here."
Shikamaru started to feel calmer. His tears stopped and he rested his head against Kisame's chest, listening to the steady heartbeat. He closed his eyes and snuggled deeper into Kisame's warm embrace. Soon, the heartbeat lulled him to sleep.
Kisame looked down at Shikamaru and cuddled him close and securely. His gaze slowly went to the window and he smiled. The storm had passed, and the rain came down in a light drizzle.
