Greetings, all! I jotted this down before I went to sleep. It's loosely based on the ending of Sky Crawlers. Hope you like it!
Sky
Reno said he would be right back. He promised.
Sure, it was a dangerous mission, but Reno just grinned and rolled his eyes. He made it seem like no big deal.
"You worry too much," he'd said. "Don't you trust me?"
Those words seemed to echo on the light breeze wafting over the tarmac. Tseng, Elena, and Rude all stood there, gazing up into the sky. They were all hoping to see the gleam of sunlight on the metal hull of the chopper, or hear the steady thrums of the helicopter's blades. Any second now, Reno would fly out of that endless blue and laugh at them for worrying.
But the sky remained empty, and the only sound was that of the wind. The Turks' shadows stretched across the tarmac as minutes crept by. Ten, twenty, thirty, forty-five...
At last, Tseng turned and walked away. Rude waited a moment more, then he followed, his sunglasses concealing any sign of grief.
Elena didn't move. She stood there and looked desperately up into the sky. Reno was going to come back. He had to come back. He'd promised, so he had to…
He'd lied.
Tears made everything into a blur. Elena shut her eyes and ran after Tseng and Rude.
And the tarmac was empty.
High above in the blue sky, fluffy white clouds floated lazily, carelessly, apathetically. The sun shone down to breathe warmth into the breeze rustling the tall grass.
It was a beautiful day.
The End
