"So you can throw me to the wolves, Tomorrow I will come back, Leader of the whole pack." -Throne by Bring Me to the Horizon.
A young girl darts in and out of the trees, effectively dodging the larger male figures chasing after her. Her breath comes out in white puffs as she keeps running, long after her assailants have given up the chase. For the little girl knew that she wasn't safe until she was deep into the woods that everyone was afraid of. The snow on the ground numbed her bare feet, and continued to fall as she ran, only feeling the coldness in her feet.
She ran further into the dark forest until she tripped and fell, tumbling down a hill she didn't see. Her body finally came to a stop after hitting her head against a snow-covered rock. She lay there, shivering and bleeding, her vision going dark as she lost consciousness.
I hope death comes quickly, then I'll be able to see Momma and Poppa again, she thought, barely coming to. She didn't know how long she had been asleep, but she hoped that she could go back to sleep and not wake up again. The men that were chasing her were trying to take her, in hopes to sell her to pay off her parent's debts to the village, as they both died a few days ago.
Just as she was about to let sleep take her again, a loud howl sent terror through her little body. She hoped that the stories of the wolves the villagers told the children of to keep them out of the forest were just made up by the adults, but she was wrong.
The first howl was close, and was followed by many more, all coming closer. Finding what little strength she had left in her body, the little girl looked up, and was face to face with a giant wolf. She lay there in the snow, frozen with fear, waiting to see what the wolf was going to do.
She expected the wolf to kill her, but it did something that shocked the little girl; it laid down beside her and began to lick the wound on her head that had been bleeding. When the wolf was satisfied with its work, it let out a low howl, signaling to the others where it was, then moved closer, so the girl was pressed against its side.
Hearing closer howls, the little girl looked up, and saw countless wolves standing at the top of the hill she fell down. An even larger black wolf stood in the front and made its way down the hill to the little girl and other wolf. The black wolf sniffed at the little girl, and the wolf beside her whined.
The black wolf huffed and gently grabbed the back of the girl's tunic with its teeth and carried her to where the rest of the pack was waiting. With the girl hanging from the alpha's teeth, the pack headed further into the dark woods.
