wolf's bane

Her new school is far from home, but perhaps that's necessary. It's harder to smell the mountains in the city, and any woodsy scents are laced with the choking aroma of exhaust and the saccharine of human habitation.

To say that the city unnerves Yuki is an understatement, but she's made her choices and come to terms with the repercussions. Every now and then Yuki looks at her childhood from a distance and appreciates the irony of it. When she was younger, she desired nothing more than to run around the wilds behind their mountain house; now, she sits in her dorm room and worries over mathematics and verb conjugations.

Yuki often reminds herself that she left the wolf in her behind. She really did.

If her ears poke out from under her hair when she strains to overhear conversations in the hall, she writes it off as habit. If she uses her surprising endurance to win races, then she blames it on the guilt that rolls around her stomach whenever she considers cutting cold turkey entirely.

And Yuki quashes that feeling as soon as it rises because it reminds her too much of Ame, and how he isn't where she is.

And somewhere, on a distant mountaintop, a blue black wolf recalls the feeling of soft hands holding his and parking lots that perpetually smell of petrichor and a mother's perfume.
