Tris hated Peter.

Tris was annoyed at Caleb.

Four hated Peter.

Four was annoyed at Caleb.

And the two weren't really going to become friends with the drugged-up Amity idiots.

Peter would sit alone.

Caleb would remember his Abnegation roots, sitting with the other boy.

They didn't talk much. There was a "Hello", a "How are you finding Amity?"

And they had been sat together for weeks.

And then they had a conversation.

"Peter, why does Tris hate you?"

"Why do you care?"

"Touché."

"Why are you sat with me?"

"Do you want me to sit with Tris and Four? They hate me, you know."

"No, they don't. They hate me. They might not like you at the moment, but they don't hate you."

Peter was kind.

It was strange.

They spoke.

They went off together when Four and Tris played with the Amity children.

Caleb thought Peter was handsome.

Peter was male.

Caleb wasn't gay.

Caleb didn't care.

Caleb kissed him.

Tenderly, softly, slowly.

He pulled away.

Peter pulled him back.

And that was how they worked.

Stolen kisses.

Hugs in the Amity fields.

Stolen kisses.

Hugs in the Erudite labs.

Stolen kisses.

Hugs wherever they were.

Stolen kisses.

And then Caleb leaves.

Peter worries.

Caleb comes back.

Caleb cries about Tris.

And then the kisses are no longer secret.

Caleb cries into his shoulder.

Peter leaves.

Peter isn't selfless.

Peter takes the memory serum.

Caleb cries.

No stolen kisses.

No hugs in the fields.

No stolen kisses.

No hugs in the labs.

No crying together, no tender kisses.

They try to rebuild the relationship.

Peter tries hard.

But he no longer knows Caleb.

And Caleb can't survive alone.
