Bella's POV

I sighed as I pushed my chair back from the desk. I grabbed my bag and headed to fifth period; lunch. Finally.

It was my first day here at Forks High School and I was so ready for it to be over. So far, I'd met only one person, Alice Cullen. She had promised to sit with me at lunch and introduce me to her family.

I walked through the lunch line, and when I realized I was at the end of the line with nothing in my hands, I quickly grabbed a soda from a freezer/fridge-type-thing. After I had paid, I spotted Alice. She was waving me over to a table surrounded by what was probably her family. As I made my way over to the table, I noticed something about them. They all had pale skin, and I mean pale, and all their eyes were golden, like honey, except for one. He had copper colored hair and was thin, but at the same time, he was strong. His eyes were as dark as midnight. Our eyes connected for a split second and then he suddenly jumped up. His chair made a loud screeching noise as it scraped across the white tile. He rushed out of the cafeteria and I caught a glimpse of his face. He looked mad, and let me tell you, it was a scary kind of mad, not just an ordinary mad. His family looked surprised, but then Alice sat down and started engaging everyone in conversation, so the stress kind of lifted.

I learned that there were five Cullen kids: Alice (who I already knew), Jasper, Rosalie, Emmett, and…Edward. Edward was the one who had rushed out during lunch. Alice had told me not to worry, that he'd had to finish a project that was due next period. I wasn't entirely convinced.

"Bye, Bella!" Alice's musical voice screamed across the parking lot as I climbed into my old truck.

I waved to her as I started up the car. The engine gave a protesting moan, but eventually started up.
