Martin the Warrior lay dreaming. He was lying on his back in Brockhall, on a couch big enough for ten mice to sit on with room to spare. Redwall Abbey was under construction. They had nearly finished the roof of the dormitories. Now he lay, tired, sleeping, and dreaming. He was tossing and turning, but due to the size of the couch was in no danger of falling off. Finally, he calmed when a soft voice whispered in his ear.

"Go to sleep."

He murmured, both in his dream and in life. "I am asleep."

His eyes snapped open. He looked around. He was now in a hammock, looking out over woods from a porch. A mousemaid was standing on the porch, looking over the bustling settlement that Martin now recognized as Noonvale. He closed his eyes to go back to sleep. Then they snapped open again. Noonvale! He sat up, and immediately noticed the change in his clothing. It was now dark, with silver embroidery on the collar and cuffs.

The maid turned. It was Rose. Martin kept his face expressionless as he spoke to her. "This is a dream."

Rose kissed him on the lips briefly, and whispered in his ear. "Then it's a good dream."

They both kissed each other, and Martin rejoiced inwardly at the soft touch of her lips.

They broke apart, and stood looking out over Noonvale, Martin's arm around Rose's waist. Rose looked at him. "It wasn't your fault, Martin."

Martin turned his head to her. "Yes it was. If I hadn't made you come along, we would be here in real life."

Rose shook her head. "No, Martin. If we had gone to Noonvale, Mossflower would have lost the war. It was your destiny to go come to Mossflower."

Martin laid his head on hers. "You could have stayed in Noonvale. Then I would have come back for you."

She shook her head again. "No. It wouldn't have turned out that way."

"Rose-"

She put a paw to his lips to stop him talking. "It's no use, Martin. I'm sorry that we couldn't have lived here together. I would have liked to meet all the friends you've made."

She then kissed him long and hard.

When they broke apart, Martin hugged her. "I miss you, Rose."

She hugged him back. "I miss you too, Martin. Even though Felldoh's here, it's not the same without you."

Martin woke with a start, and felt his face. It was wet. The door opened. Martin sat up, and wiped his eyes as Bella poked her muzzle around the door. "Is everything alright, Martin? You were talking in your sleep."

Martin smiled. "It's nothing, Bella. I was just dreaming."

As the badger closed the door, Martin buried his head in his paws.
