Prologue

When the time comes, you will know. For some, the name appears on their self when they meet their soul mate, for others it appears way before or way after. Something decides when the time is right to show you your mark. All you need to do is have faith, until then.

At that time, for a ten year old, her mother words had been nothing but rubbish. Suddenly, someone you have never met would be chose as the one for you. How could that be?

She scoffed at the very idea of there being a The One.

Yet, the older she got, clearer was the possibility of such a fate.

First revelation came in the form of her aunt, etched on her stomach was his name when she met her destined on a grocery store in the midst of a summer afternoon.

Mai had been living with Aunt Yumi- her only relative still alive- for some period, losing her mother that fall.

Her father was already dead when she was born. She never really felt the loss of him. How can something you never had be lost?

Once in a while, there would be a pain in her chest, though, for something she was supposed to have.

The death of her mother was a rude shock and the adumbration to true pain. She saw what death looked like, up close.

It was also the time Mai realized Ghost stories was never just that. Stories.

Sometimes, they were true. They were as true as the ghost of her mother haunting her was.

Yumi's love story was beautiful and a tragic one.

When Mai was fourteen, her aunt Yumi and Tamaki met, fell in love and got married just as quickly, all in the span of one year. A whirlwind romance, a promise of lifetime of passion and love- a couple who looked perfect to anyone who looked at them.

And then it all went to hell.

Yumi was detected with lung cancer- years of smoking catching up with her- and her life was taken away, in the span of six months.

Tamaki fell into a depression, worked and drank alcohol, until life became too much to handle and he committed the greatest sin known by human - suicide.

Mai saw firsthand the destruction the idea of a soul mate could cause and waited for her mark to appear, with both dread and anticipation.

On the second of her senior year in school, it did.

She was horrified when she thought the rude boy named Kazuya Shibuya was the one for her, after his fake polite behavior in the classroom.

However, when she went home, to finally read the name that had burned on the underside of her wrist when the blue-eyed boy came into view, it was not the name she had expected.

Oliver Davis.

A/N: Hello, I am back after a long time and with a multi chapter fic this time!

This is based on the concept ofof Soul Mates. I have been reading a lot of those fics recently and I thought, why not make one on Naru and Mai?

Ono Sensei called them canon. How about super canon? ;)

Please, feel free to review. This is just the Prologue and everything looks a bit messy, I know. But don't worry, there will be detailed exploration of everything later on.

Constructive criticism is hugely appreciated.
