Left Behind
The door creaked as it slowly opened, revealing a dark apartment. Everything seemed so still, so at peace with itself. 'Ironic.' Mimi thought, considering the frantic, chaotic thoughts running through her mind.
She dropped her bag and walked into Roger's room, giving a bittersweet half smile to the sight of him drenched in moonlight, lying on the bed. His eyes opened as she sat down on the bed, facing as far away from him as possible.
"Where were you?" he asked, with a hint of jealousy in his tone.
"Out." She whispered, barely audible. Tears threatened to fall, but the thick air kept her restrained from speaking.
"Don't try telling me you were at work. I fucking know better than that, Mimi" Roger said. His anger began to rise at the thought of her cheating on him again.
"No, Roger,… please." She begged, still so soft in the night air. She felt the tears begin to drop, burning her skin as they fell. Roger got out of bed and stood, more furious than understanding.
"So who was it this time? Benny?" he snarled.
"Roger… I"
"Oh no, I know… you found a new puppet to pull the stings on, didn't you?" his voice rose more and more as he interrupted her.
"Roger listen!" she begged.
"I'm tired of listening! I can't do this anymore!" he went for the door, preparing to run from his problems.
"Roger I'm pregnant!" she screamed. She began to sob, knowing there was nothing to hide anymore, nothing to hold on to. Roger stopped dead in his tracks, feeling a lump in his throat. He could run… he was tempted, but even he couldn't escape this.
There were no words to be said. They both knew. How could it happen? Roger sat down beside Mimi, putting an arm around her, letting her cry into his shoulder. She desperately clung to him, finding the only shred of comfort left in her life. Through watery eyes Roger looked out the window above his bed. The sun began to rise, beginning a new day and growing one more day closer to the end of his and Mimi's life. He held her tighter, knowing it could never be. He cried for the child that would never see the beauty of the world, never feeling that very sun on his face, never growing in his parents' eyes.
For that brief minute, Roger and Mimi held a bond so strong and so loving and tragic. Nothing more could be said, not until morning at least. While their silent turmoil filled their hearts and minds with a deafening tone, the world remained calm and peaceful. Life went on, as one life was left behind.
