Disclaimer: I don't own "The Count of Monte Cristo," its characters, or the
dialog in this piece. All these items belong to Alexandre Dumas (author of
the orginal novel), Jay Wolpert (screenwriter), and Buena Vista Home Video,
who created the 2002 movie, etc. Please don't sue; I'm only borrowing this
terrific scene. This is nonprofit, I make no money.
Author's Note: This little (392 words!) piece is based off the 2002 movie. Please don't yell at me for not reading the book, it is on my reading list, which is about as long as the Nile River, and only growing longer. Please enjoy. Reviews, criticism, and even flames are loved! You'll probably see more of these teeny pieces from me because I'm doing these as exercises in order to expand and help my description of a person's thoughts and emotions. Thanks for reading!

Mercedes sat near the window; tears were streaming down her face. "Oh my dear Mercedes," Fernand whispered, holding her close. "Hush, now, darling. Why do you weep?"
Mercedes turned her head from him, if she told him she could never pull it off, "I weep because I do not know what I am going to do with my life now." She faced him, "Everything was perfect. I was going to marry Edmond who had his captain's papers, and we were happy."
Fernand let her go and stood up. Everything was always about Edmond. "Be my wife, Mercedes. Let Edmond go and seek to live a happy life with me." He held his arms out.
Mercedes stood up and went to him. He squeezed her tightly. Mercedes knew that all he was after was a bride, a new trophy, a trinket. His next whistle. It would work fine enough for her. She could bear him Edmond's child and make him believe it was his own. Fernand would never be the wiser for it.
Edmond was gone, tainted by betrayal, but Mercedes refused to allow her son to be tainted at birth. Mercedes would always love Edmond with her whole heart and if she could raise his child as the child of a respectable citizen rather than the bastard child of a traitor so be it.
Mercedes believed in Edmond and his innocence but that would not keep his child from scorn. This was the only way to save face and the fate of her child. "We shall announce it at once, and you my dear shall have the greatest ring in all of France!" Fernand kissed her quickly and ran out.
Mercedes sank back into her chair and touched the twine she had wrapped around her finger. She swore to Edmond it would never leave her finger and it would not. Another ring from another man would lie on her finger, but never would have any meaning. The only ring that would have any meaning was the twine.
She lightly placed her hand over her belly. Edmond would never know his child and her child would never know Edmond and she knew she could never let her son, or daughter, ever know the truth. She closed her eyes. Edmond may have been taken from her, but he had left something, very precious behind.
