He leaned against the tree, one brilliant blue eye trained on her through a shock of gold sun streamed through in arrows of light like party streamers.

"Ne, Rin-chan."

She looked up from where she sat cross-legged in the unkempt grass and catching his eye she smiled back with a lazy twitch at the corner of her lips.

"Yes?"

He snapped off a blade of grass and twirled it in his fingers.

"When will you wake up?"

She sighed and rested her head on the tree, only inches away from his own.

"I don't know."

The blonde boy dropped the grass before staring up at the sky. And then at her. One eye gazed down at her. She smiled sadly at the empty socket half-hidden behind his long bangs and tore off a blade of grass. She twirled it in her trembling fingers.

"I don't know."

She opened her eyes, blue staring into the darkness. The sun peeked through the blinds, casting stripes on pristine white sheets. She stared up at the ceiling in quiet contemplation.

"Another dream?"

"Another dream."

She shifted her head, wavy gold tresses fanning around her head like a wild halo. A man with hair like her's sat at her side, one blue eye peeking out like a star. She stared at him for a while before chuckling. Chuckling turned into laughing. Laughing then turned into hysterical cackles. She started to sob. Crystalline tears poured from her eyes. The man simply watched as she cried. Soon, her sobs softened into quiet whimpers.

They stayed in quiet contemplation.

"...when will I wake up?"

Her voice shook, broken and childish. A small, harsh laugh escaped him.

"I don't know, Rin-chan."

She turned to look at him. His one blue eye looked back at her, bright with something inhuman.

"Probably never."

Maybe it was something in the way he said it or maybe she was just crazy already but she began to laugh. Laugh and laugh until tears of resignation streamed from her dulling blue managed to choke out a response through her laughter and tears.

"Yes...yes, you're right. Probably never. I'll never wake up."

He smiled sadly down at her and reached out a hand and covered her left eye.

"You can stay with me now, Rin-chan."

She looked to him, life leaving her. She smiled and closed her eyes.

"Yes. Stay with you. Forever."

His smile was as soft as a sunlight.

"Forever."

They watched as the machine flat lined. Tears cascaded down pale cheeks and shouts of agony echoed in the pale room that smelled of death already. Restrained by nurses, they could only watch as the doctor checked for anymore sign of life. Moment after moment passed before he shook his head in somber resignation. He began to pull the sheets over her face. But he stopped. And he brought his hands to her eyes. One was lifeless blue, the other was glazed over with a black film. Closing her eyes, he pulled the sheet over her head.

A pity.

So young.

"I'm sorry, Mr. and Mrs. Kagamine. The malignant tumor behind her left eye expanded into her brain. We...could do nothing."

Hanging his head in sadness, the man and woman broke down again, grabbing onto each other in their grief.

Behind, sunlight streamed onto the pristine white sheets, the blinds pulled away to let the light shine in.

The sky was vibrant blue.

"Forever."
